Untilrecently,itwastheessenceofstatesmanship,scholarshipandjusticetopurgestrongemotionfromourdeliberations.Imagestoday,though,aresoplentifulandsharpthattheydominateourthoughtprocesses.AlthoughMr.ApkonrelishestheimmediacyofYouTube,hefearsthatpoliticaladvertiserswillsoonbeabletocraftstoriesaround"hiddenmentalhungers",easilymanipulatingvoters.

Citizenstendtothinkaboutvotinginoneoftwoways.First,youbaseyourvoteonyouridentity.Youareafarmer,soyouchoosethecandidatebestdisposedtowardsfarmers.Thesecondtheoryisthatyouvoteonarguments,independentofidentity.Youbelieveasalestaxshouldreplaceincometax,soyouvoteforthecandidatewhosharesthatopinion.Buttoday"simage-basedcommunicationhaslittletodowithidentityorarguments.Ithastodowiththelowest-common-denominatortraitsthatmarkyouasahumananimal.
