ThearrivalofEuropeansinAmerica,andtheopeningofhugefarmsandplantationstogrowcotton,fruitandvegetables,meanttherewasanimmediateneedforpeopletoworkonthem.Thismarkedthebeginningoftheslavetrade.Formorethantwohundredyears,untilthebeginningofthe19thcentury,whenthetradewasfinallystopped,millionsofpeopleweretakenbyforcefromtheirhomesinAfricaandtransportedtotheNewWorldtoworkasslaves.SixmillionweretakentotheCaribbeanislandswheretherewereBritishandFrenchlandowners.
Naturally,theEuropeansalsoimportedtheirownfestivals.Sotheslaveswereforcedtowatchastheirmasterscelebratedcarnivalwithfood,drink,andmaskeddances.InTrinidad,theslavesbegantoholdtheirowncarnivalcelebrations:
