WhenPollygottothestationentrance,itwasempty.Outside,wherevershelookedthefoglaylikeathick,greycloud.Therewasnooneinsight.PollysetofftowardsParkStreet.Asshewalkedalongthenarrowstreet,sheheardthesoundoffootstepsapproaching,butbythetimeshereachedthecornerofthestreet,thefootstepsweregone.SuddenlyPollyfeltaroughhandbrushhercheek,andsheheardaman’svoiceinherearsaying‘Sorry.The’manmovedaway.Shecouldfeelherheartbeatingwithfear.
Thehelpfulstranger
Thensheheardthesoundagain—softfootstepsbehindher.Aminutebefore,she
hadwishedforsomeonetocomealong.Nowshewantedtorun,butfearheldherstill.

雾警报
那天早上当波莉离开家，城市已经被一层灰色的薄雾覆盖。

Thoughitmayseemhardtobelieve,thebirdtheofficerusesisthesamebirdoftenseeninpublicparks—thepigeon.Pigeonshaveawonderfulsenseofdirectionandcanfindtheirwayhomeoverlongdistances.Indeed,pigeonshavebeenknowntoflyhomefromasfarawayas1,800kilometres.Thatiswhypigeonshavebeenusedsinceancienttimestocarrythenewsoreventhemail.However,itwasinwarthattheyfoundtheirgreatestuse.DuringbothWorldWarIandII,pigeonswereemployedbyarmiestocarrymessagestoandfromthefrontlines,savingthelivesofmanysoldiersandevenhelpingwinsomeimportantvictories.
