Itisverydifficulttosayjustwhencolonizationbegan.ThefirsthundredyearsafterChristopherColumbus’sjourneyofdiscoveryin1492didnotproduceanysettlementontheNorthAmericacontinentbutrathersomeSpanishtradingpostsfurthersouth,agreatinterestingoldandadventureandsomecolorfulcrimesinwhichtheEnglishhadtheirpart.JohnCabot,originallyfromGenoabutacitizenofVenicewasestablishedasatraderinBristol,England,whenhemadeajourneyin1497.Buthisship,theMatthew,withitscrewofeighteen,didnomorethanseeanisland(probablyofftheNewEnglandcoast)andreturnhome.HeandhissonmadefurthervoyagesacrossthenorthAtlanticwhichenabledtheEnglishcrowntoclaima"legal"titletoNorthAmerica.ButforalongtimeafterwardstheEuropeans’interestinAmericawasmainlycorffinedtotheSpanishactivitiesfurthersouth.

ThefirstbeginningofpermanentsettlementinNorthAmericawerenearlyahundredyearsafterColumbus’sfirstvoyage.TheEnglishmanSirWalterRaleighclaimedthewholeofNorthAmericaforEnglandcallingitVirginia.In1585hesentasmallgroupofpeoplewholandedinRoanokeIsland,buttheystayedonlyforayearandthenwentbacktoEnglandwithanotherexpeditionledbyDrakein1587.Asecondgroupwholandedin1587hadalldisappearedwhenafurtherexpeditionarrivedin1590.

ThefirstpermanentsettlementinNorthAmericawasin1607.EnglishcapitalistsfoundedtwoVirginiacompanies,asouthernonebasedinLondonandanorthernonebasedinBristol.ItwasdecidedtogivethenameNewEnglandtothenorthernarea.ThefirstsettlersinVirginiawerelittlemorethanwageslavestothecompany.Allweremenandtheexperimentwasnotverysuccessful.Manydied.Thosewhosurvivedlivedinmiserableconditions.By1619thecolonyhadonlyathousandpeople.

Itisnocoincidencethatthetwomajorairlinebankruptcieswereamongthecompaniesspecializingincheapflights.Butlowfaresrequireconsistentlyfullaircrafttomakeflightseconomicallyviable,andintherecentrecessionthevolumeoftraffichasnotgrown.Equallythelargenumberofairlinesjostlingfortheavailablepassengershascreatedahugeexcessofcapacity.Thenetresultofexcesscapacityandcut-throatcompetitiondrivingdownfareshadbeentopushsomeairlinesintocollapseandleavemanyothershoveringonthebrink.

Againstthisgrimbackground,itisnosurprisethatairlinesareturningincreasinglytowardsthebusinesstravelerstoimprovetheirratesofreturn.Theyhaveinvestedmuchtimeandefforttoestablishexactlywhattheexecutivedemandsforsittingapartfromthetourists.

Highonthelistoforioritiesisounctualitwanexecutive’stimeismoney.In-flightserviceisanotherareawheretheairlinesarejostlingfortheexecutive’sattention.Thefreedrinksandheadsetsandbetterfoodareallpartofthelure.

Anotherdevelopmenthasbeentheaccentofseatingarrangements.Regulartravelershavebecomewellversedinthedebateaboutseatpitch--theamountofroombetweeneachpassenger.Andfirstclasspassengersarenowofferedsleeperetteseats,which,forlongjourneysmakeitpossibletosnatchapropernight’ssleep.Sleeper-etteshaveprovedsopopularthattheywillsoonbecomeuniversalinthefrontendofmostaircraft.
