JackandBen,bothseriouslyill,occupiedthesamehospitalroom.Jack,whosebedwasnexttotheroom'sonlywindow,wasallowedtositupinhisbedforanhoureachafternoontohelpdrainthefluidfromhislungs.ButBenhadtospendalldayandnightflatonhisbed.Tokilltimethetwomenbegantotalk.Theytalkedforhoursabouttheirwives,families,theirhomes,theirjobs,theirinvolvementinthemilitaryservice,andwheretheyhadbeenonvacation.Asdayswentby,adeepfriendshipbegantodevelopbetweenthem.

EveryafternoonwhenJackcouldsitup,hewouldpassthetimebydescribingtoBenallthethingshecouldseeoutsidethewindow.AndBenbegantoliveforthoseone-hourperiodswherehisworldwouldbebroadenedandenlivenedbyalltheactivityandcoloroftheworldoutside.

Thewindowoverlookedaparkwithalovelylake.Ducksandswansplayedonthewaterwhilechildrensailedtheirmodelboats.Youngloverswalkedarminarmamidflowersofeverycoloroftherainbow.Grandoldtreesbeautifiedthelandscape,andafineviewofthecityskylinecouldbeseeninthedistance.

AsJackdescribedallthisinexquisitedetail,Benwouldclosehiseyesandimaginethepicturesquescenes.

OnewarmafternoonJackdescribedaparadepassingby.AlthoughBencouldn'theartheband--hecouldseeitinhismind'seyeasJackportrayeditwithdescriptivewords.

Daysandweekspassed.OnemorningthedaynursearrivedtobringwaterfortheirbathsonlytofindthelifelessbodyofJack,whohaddiedpeacefullyinhissleep.Shewassaddenedandcalledthehospitalattendantstotakethebodyaway.

Benwasheartbroken.LifewithoutJackwasevenmoreunbearable.HowhelongedtohearJack'svoiceandhismelodiousdescriptionsoftheoutsideworld!

Ashelookedatthewindow,anideasuddenlyoccurredtohim.Perhapshecouldseeforhimselfwhatitwaslikeoutside.Assoonasitseemedappropriate,Benaskedifhecouldbemovednexttothewindow.Thenursewashappytomaketheswitch,andaftermakingsurehewascomfortable,shelefthimalone.

Slowly,painfully,heproppedhimselfupononeelbowtotakehisfirstlookattheworldoutside.Finally,hewouldhavethejoyofseeingitforhimself!

Hestrainedtoslowlyturntolookoutthewindowbesidethebed.Itfacedablankwall!

Atthis,Redcouldstanditnolonger.Heshouted:

"Iamtherulerofallofyou.Iamthecolorofblood--life'sblood!

Iamalsothecolorofdangerandbravery,ofpassionandlove."

Purpleroseuptohisfullheight:

"Iamthecolorofroyaltyandpower.Iamthesignofauthorityandwisdom.Peopledonotquestionme!

Theylistenandobey."

FinallyIndigospoke:

"Thinkofme.Iamthecolorofsilence.Youhardlynoticeme,butwithoutmeyouallbecomesuperficial.Irepresentthoughtandreflection."

Andsothecolorswentonboasting.Theirquarrellingbecamelouderandlouder.Suddenlytherewasastartlingflashofbrightlightning,followedbyarollofthunder.Rainstartedtopourdown.Thecolorscroucheddowninfear,drawingclosetooneanotherforcomfort.

Justthenrainbegantospeak:

"Youfoolishcolors,fightingamongstyourselves,eachtryingtodominatetherest.Don'tyouknowthatyouwereeachmadeforaspecialpurpose,uniqueanddifferent?

Joinhandswithoneanotherandcometome."

Doingastheyweretold,thecolorsunitedandjoinedhands.

Thenraincontinued:

"Fromnowon,whenitrains,eachofyouwillstretchacrosstheskytoformagreatbowofcolorsasareminderthatyoucanallliveinpeace.Therainbowisasignofhopefortomorrow."

Andso,wheneveragoodrainwashestheworld,arainbowappearsinthesky,toletusremembertoappreciateoneanother.

Rob:

Well,Iwentintothismeetingandtherewereabout,er...sevenoreightpeopleinthereandIjustsaid'Hello'toeverybodyandsatdown.Apparently,whatIshouldhavedoneistogoroundtheroomshakinghandswitheveryoneindividually.Well,youknow,it'ssillyofmebecauseIfoundoutlateritupseteveryone.Imean,IthinktheyfeltIwastakingthemforgranted.

Kate:

Well,IknowthatbecausewhenIwasinFrancethefirsttime,Ifinishedameeting,with'Goodbye,everyone!

'toallthepeopleintheroom.TherewereabouthalfadozenpeopletherebutIwasinahurrytoleave,soIjustsaidthatandleft.Well,IlaterfoundoutthatwhatIshouldhavedoneisshakehandswitheveryoneinthegroupbeforeleaving.Now,apparently,it'sthepolitethingtodo.
