It'sagreatpleasureandaprivilegetowelcomeyouheretodaytothishistoricoccasion.OnbehalfofthefacultyandthestaffandthestudentsoftheHarvardBusinessSchoolIwelcomeallofyoutoourcampus.We'recertainlypleasedtohavePremierWenheretodayonthisgreatoccasion.It'smygoodfortunetobeabletointroducetoyoutodaymygoodfriend,BillKirby,whoisDeanoftheFacultyofArtsandSciences.Bill.

Thankyouverymuch,Kim.TheFacultyofArtsandSciencesatHarvardjoinsinwelcomingallofyouandourdistinguishedguestsfromthePeople'sRepublicofChina.Todayisaveryimportantoccasion,anopportunityfordialoguebetweenmembersoftheHarvardcommunityandtheleaderofoneofthemostrapidlytransformingandtransformativecountriesintheworld,whosefutureiscloselyintertwinedwithourown.Andinthisglobalera,universitiesserveanincreasinglyimportantfunction.Wearepointsofconnectionandcommunicationbetweencitizensofdifferentregionsoftheworld.HarvardishonoredtowelcomePremierWenandhisdelegation.Asthefirstlineof"TheAnalects"tellsus,"Howverygladwearetowelcomefriendsfromafar."Ourguestspeakertodayis,asyouknow,thePremierofthePeople'sRepublicofChina,PremierWenJiabao.

SeatedtothePremier'sleftisMr.LiZhaoxing,MinisterofForeignAffairsofthePeople'sRepublic.NexttoMinisterLiisMaKai,MinisteroftheNationalDevelopmentandReformCommission.ToMr.MaKai'sleftisMr.WeiLiqun,whoisDirectoroftheResearchOfficeoftheStateCouncil.AndseatednexttotheDirectoristheHonorableYangJiechi,theAmbassadorofthePeople'sRepublicofChinatotheUnitedStates.

Andletmeintroducethegentlemantomyright.WehavealreadyhadthepleasureofhearingfromDeanKimClarkoftheHarvardBusinessSchool.Andthegentlemantohisright,ProfessorDwightPerkins,theDirectoroftheHarvardUniversityAsiaCenter.ToProfessorPerkins'rightisProfessorWiltEdema,DirectorofHarvard'sFairbankCenterforEastAsianResearch,andtohisrightistheHonorableClarkRandt,theUnitedStatesAmbassadortothePeople'sRepublicofChina.Welcome,AmbassadorGrant.Thankyouallforcoming,andmayInowintroduceournextspeaker,ladiesandgentlemen,thePresidentofHarvardUniversity,LawrenceSummers.

PRESIDENTSUMMERS:

Thanksverymuch,Bill.OnadaylikethisIamparticularlygladtohaveadistinguishedscholarofChinesehistoryastheDeanofourFacultyofArtsandSciences.PremierWen,wearehonoredtohaveyouheretoday.OnbehalfoftheentireHarvardcommunityandespeciallythe350ChinesestudentsatHarvard,andthenearly500scholars,teachersandprofessorsatHarvard,Iamdelightedtowelcomeyoutoouruniversity.

WhenthehistoryofoureraiswrittenacenturyortwofromnowIsuspectthattheendoftheColdWar,thefalloftheBerlinWall,maybethesecondstoryinthathistory.ThefirststoryinthathistorymaybethedramaticdevelopmentsontheAsiancontinentoverthelastquartercenturyandthenext,andatthecenterofthatstoryisyourcountry,China.Thisissurelyamomentofpromise,ofrisk,andofopportunityinChina.

Andourdistinguishedspeaker,WenJiabao,ispoisedtoleadChinaintoanewerawithgreatpotentialforgrowthandprosperity.Ageologistbytrainingandanexperiencedpublicservantovermorethanthreedecades,PremierWenhastheverywell-establishedreputationofbeingaveryableandverywell-trustedstatesman.HeandIhadachancetomeet,itwasmyverygreatprivilegetomeetwithhim,whenItraveledtoChinaseveralyearsagoonbehalfoftheU.S.government,andIamnowdelightedtowelcometoHarvardUniversityPremierWen.PremierWen,welookforwardtoyourremarks.

Mr.President,ladiesandgentlemen.IwouldliketobeginbysincerelythankingPresidentSummersforhiskindinvitation.Harvardisaworldfamousinstitutionofhigherlearning,attractingthebestmindsandbringingthemupgenerationaftergeneration.Inits367yearsofhistory,HarvardhasproducedsevenAmericanpresidentsandmorethan40NobelLaureates.Youhavereasontobeproudofyouruniversity.Itismygreatpleasuretodaytostandonyourrostrumandhavethisface-to-faceexchangewithyou.Ilikeyoungpeopleverymuch.Becauseyoungpeoplearealwayssoenergeticandtheyhavetheleastconservativeideas,andtheyrepresentthefutureofourworld.AndthisyearduringtheoutbreakoftheSARSepidemic,Ithoughtaboutthestudents.Icaredalotforthem,andIwantedtogainstrengthfromthem.SothatwaswhyIwenttoourTsinghuaUniversitytohavelunchwiththem.AndalsoIwenttoBeijingUniversityandIhadachatwiththestudentsinthelibrary.Atthattimeprobablyyoucouldnothaveimaginedwhatanatmospherewewerein,butIfeltthattheyoungpeoplewereashopefulasever.Theyalwaysdreamaboutabeautifulfuture.Theypointedtothetreesoutsidethewindowandsaidtome,"Peopleliketosaythatwhenalltheleavesgrow,whenthetreebecomesgreenallover,thiscrisiswillbeover.Andtheyalsosaidthattheywouldallratherbethegreenleavesthemselves,andtheyaskedme,Premier,inthisbigtree,whichpartofthetreeareyou?

Iimmediatelyreplied,"I'malsooneoftheleaveslikeyou."

Ithinkthedevelopmentsprovedtobeliketheypredicted.Whenspringcameback,whenthetreesbecamegreen,thisoutbreakwasdrivenaway.

Asthespeakertoday,ofcourseIthinkIneedtoexplainmyselfalittlebittomyaudience,andIoweyouthisbecauseinthiswaywecanhaveaheart-to-heartdiscussion.

Asyouknow,asyouprobablyknow,I'mthesonofaschoolteacher.Ispentmychildhoodmostlyinthesmokeandfireofwar.Iwasnotasfortunateasyouasachild.WhenJapaneseaggressorsdroveallthepeopleinmyplacetotheCentralPlaza,Ihadtohuddlecloselyagainstmymother.Lateron,mywholefamilyandhousewereallburnedup,andeventheprimaryschoolthatmygrandpabuilthimselfallwentupinflames.Inmyworklife,mostofthetimeIworkedinareasunderthemostharshconditionsinChina.ThereforeIknowmycountryandmypeoplequitewellandIlovethemsodeeply.

Thetitleofmyspeechtodayis"TurningYourEyesToChina."ChinaandtheUnitedStatesarefarapart,andtheydiffer,theydiffergreatlyinthelevelofeconomicdevelopmentandculture.[Atthispointaprotesterinterrupted.]

Pleaseallowmetocontinuewithmyspeech.Ladiesandgentlemen,Iwillnotbedisrupted.BecauseI'mdeeplyconvincedthatthe300millionAmericanpeopledohavefriendlyfeelingstowardstheChinesepeople.

AndI'mdeeplyconvincedthedevelopmentandimprovementofChina-U.S.relationswillnotonlyservetheinterestsofourtwopeoplesbutisalsoconducivetopeaceandstabilityofthewholeworld.

IknowthatChinaandtheUnitedStatesarefarapartgeographicallyandtheydiffergreatlyinthelevelofeconomicdevelopmentandaculturalbackground.Ihopemyspeechwillhelpincreaseourmutualunderstanding.

InordertounderstandthetrueChina,achangingsocietyfullofpromises,itisnecessarytogettoknowheryesterday,hertoday,andhertomorrow.

Chinayesterdaywasabigancientcountrythatcreatedasplendidcivilization.

Asweallknow,inthehistoryofmankind,thereappearedtheMesopotamiancivilizationinWestAsia,theancientEgyptiancivilizationalongtheNileinNorthAfrica,theancientGreek-RomancivilizationalongthenorthernbankoftheMediterranean,theancientIndiancivilizationintheIndusRiverValleyinSouthAsia,andtheChinesecivilizationoriginatingintheYellowandYangtzerivervalleys.Owingtoearthquake,flood,plagueorfamine,ortoalieninvasionorinternalturmoil,someoftheseancientcivilizationswitheredaway,someweredestroyedandothersbecameassimilatedintoothercivilizations.OnlytheChinesecivilization,thankstoitsstrongcohesivepowerandinexhaustibleappeal,hassurvivedmanyvicissitudesintact.The5,000-year-longcivilizationisthesourceofprideofeveryChinese.

ThetraditionalChineseculture,bothextensiveandprofound,startsfarbackandrunsalong,longcourse.Morethan2,000yearsago,thereemergedinChinaConfucianismrepresentedbyConfuciusandMencius,TaoismrepresentedbyLaoZiandZhuangZi,andmanyothertheoriesanddoctrinesthatfiguredprominentlyinthehistoryofChinesethought,allbeingcoveredbythefamousterm"themasters'hundredschools".FromConfuciustoDr.SunYat-sen,thetraditionalChineseculturepresentsmanypreciousideasandqualities,whichareessentiallypopulistanddemocratic.Forexample,theylaystressontheimportanceofkindnessandloveinhumanrelations,ontheinterestofthecommunity,onseekingharmonywithoutuniformityandontheideathattheworldisforall.Especially,patriotismasembodiedinthesaying"Everybodyisresponsiblefortheriseorfallofthecountry";thepopulistideasthat"peoplearethefoundationofthecountry"andthat"peoplearemoreimportantthanthemonarch";thecodeofconductof"Don'tdotootherswhatyoudon'twantotherstodotoyou";andthetraditionalvirtuestaughtfromgenerationtogeneration:

longsufferingandhardworking,diligenceandfrugalityinhouseholdmanagement,andrespectingteachersandvaluingeducation.Allthesehaveplayedagreatroleinbindingandregulatingthefamily,thecountryandthesociety.
