OrganizationalBehaviorThepurposebehindthispersonalstatementistonotonlygainadmissiontoyourwell-establishedandhighlyrespectedPh.D.program,buttoimpressuponyoumypassionforlearningandmytremendousdesiretosucceedinbothscholastic1researchandinteachingontheprofessionallevel.Ihavebasedmydecisiontopursueanacademiccareernotonpurely2practicalreasons,butratheronmyownnaturalinterestsandaptitude3.Mypersonalphilosophyisthatmoneyandsocialstatusshouldnotbepursuedaslife-consumingobjectivesandthatinactualitytheyaretheby-productsofgoalsoriginatingfromone’sinnerneeds.Iunderstandthatmyintellectualcapacityisagift,andIintendtousethisgifttotheverybestofmysubstantialcapabilities4.IaminterestedinthefieldofstudyofOrganizationalBehavior.Inthepast,Ihavehadtheexperienceofworkinginsettingswherethepeopleandthecorporate5culturesofthecompanieswerealldifferent.Ihavefoundthatthereisagreatdifferenceintheboththebehaviorsofpeopleandoftheirorganizations,dependingonwhethertheyarestate-ownedenterprises（SOEs）,largemultinational6firms,orsmalltomediumsizedforeignenterprises.Onesimpleexampleisthatoftheabilityofanemployeetoactindependentlywithoutdirectinstructionsfromhisorherboss.InmanyChineseorganizations,acting7withoutdirectinstructionsisconsideredaformofdisrespecttowardsthesupervisor8,whoisgenerallyoffendedbysuchbehavior.Inmyexperienceandresearch,suchorganizationstendtohavelowoperatingefficiencywiththeemployeeslosingtheirinnate9abilitytotaketheinitiative.Incontrast,foreignenterprisestendtowelcomeemployeeswhohavetheabilitytomakedecisionsontheirown,thoughtheextenttowhichthisistruedependsonwhetherthesupervisorisalocalChineseoranexpatriate.Theseorganizationshavecomparativelyhigheroperatingefficiencyandemployeesenjoygreaterjobsatisfaction.MyresearchandobservationshaveshownmethatonlyasmallfractionofChineseemployeesarewelladaptedtotheworkingmethodsoftheforeignenterprises.Manyareaccustomedtomerelyhavingothersmakethedecisionsforthemandarenotexperiencedattakingonsomereasonableresponsibilities.Whataccountsforthedifferentbehaviorsofthesepeopleandtheirorganizations?
