Mostofthechildrencomplainedtheystruggledtocopewiththeamountofhomeworktheywereassigned.

Overone-thirdreportedheadachesorabdominalpains—psychosomaticsymptomsofstress—atleastonceaweek.Themoststressedchildrenreportedincidenceofachesorpainsoffourtimesaweek.

Theinvestigation,ledbyThereseHesketh,aprofessoratUniversityCollegeLondon(UCL)CentreforInternationalHealthandDevelopment,pointedthefingeratextremecompetitivenessinChina’seducationsystem,fromtheonsetofprimaryschool.

“Thecompetitiveandpunitiveeducationalenvironmentleadstohighlevelsofstressandpsychosomaticsymptoms,”theauthorssay.

“Measurestoreduceunnecessarystressonchildreninschoolsshouldbeintroducedurgently.”

ThepaperappearsinArchivesofDiseaseinChildhood,apeer-reviewedjournaloftheBritishMedicalAssociation(BMA).

The“urban”settingforthestudywasHangzhou,theprovincialcapitalofZhejiang,whilethe“rural”settingwasapoorcountyinQuzhouprefecture,inthewestoftheprovince.
