Itwasthelate19thCenturythatmenbegantothinkseriouslyofsendingvoyagesintothevastnessofspacepropelledbythefieryblastfromrocketnozzles.Therefollowedtwothirdsofacenturyoftheorizing,experimenting,andengineeringthatculminatedin1957inthelaunchingofthefirstartificialsatellite.Belowarelistedsomeofthemilestonesthatledtothebeginningofthespaceage.Thelistcontinuesthroughthemanydecadesofexcitingdiscoveriesandaccomplishmentsthatfollowed:

HermanGanswindt,inBerlin,drawsupthefirstdesignsforaspaceshipusingsolid-propellantrockets.
1900
RomanBaronvonGostkowskipublishesoneoftheearliestscientificdiscussionsofspacetravelintheViennesemagazineDieZeit.
1903
TheRussianKonstantinTsiolkovskypublisheshistheoreticalstudyofrocketfuelsandrocketmotorefficiency,andproposesusingliquidhydrogenandliquidoxygenaspropellants.
TheWrightbrothersofDayton,Ohiobecomethefirstpeopletodemonstratesustainedflightofaheavier-than-airmachineunderthecompletecontrolofthepilot.
