Introduction

TheArchitectureforDevelopProductisutilizedasthefoundationforthesedesigns.ThebasicrequirementsoftheArchitectureareasfollow.

-Networkloadsareprojectedtodoubleannually.Thecurrentloadis10-12IOPSperuserinthiscommunity(1IOPS=4KB).Thedesignmustbeabletoscaleaccordingly.

-Anticipatedstartupdownloadtoeachuserisseveralmegabytesofprogramsanddataandisdownloadedinabriefwindoweachmorning.Thenetworkmustbeabletohandleburstsofthisnature.

-Connectivityforapproximately200GigEserverportsisrequiredbytheendoftheyear.

-Networkmanagementiscritical,especiallyintermsofidentifyingandrectifyingfailures.

-DevelopProductfilesareverylargeandthehumanresourcesutilizingthosefilesareveryvaluable.Theconceptmustprovidemechanismstoensurefastandreliabledeliveryofthesefilesandminimizeany,intendedorunintended,interferenceintheprocess.

-Thenetworkshouldhaveasfewhops,devices,aspossiblebetweenserverandend-user.Theintentistoreducethecumulativeeffectofpotentialdevicefailure.

-ThedesiredstateistohaveminimizedroutingwithintheDevelopProductenvironment.Theassumptionisthatdirectingtrafficisbesthandledatthelowestlayerpossible.

-Theconceptmustbeconstructedinsuchafashionthatcomponentfailurewilldisplacenomorethan500users.

-ConnectivitymustbeallowedfromDevelopProductintothenormalGMenvironmentforbusinesspurposesandviceversa.

-DevelopProductusersatremotesites,includinginternationalusers,mustbeallowedintotheDevelopProductenvironmentatWarren.

Assumptions

TheDesignsamplesarepresentedbaseduponthefollowingassumptions.

-Existingfiberrunswillbeutilizedunlessotherwisespecified.

-RedundantfiberrunswillbemadeinnewconstructionintheVEC/TowerfromtheDataCentertoDistributionclosetsandfromDistributionclosettoAccessclosets.Renovationwillbeconsideredtoextendthisconcepttoexistingbuildingsasitcanbeincorporatedwithadditionalconstruction.

-Existingclosetsandclosetenvironmentswillbeutilizedunlessotherwisenoted.

-Devicestobereplacedwillutilizeexistingfiberconnections.

-AllserverswillbelocatedattheDataCenter.Noserverswillbelocatedinotherbuildings.

-Allnetworkdevicesshouldoperatewithredundantpowersupplies,supervisorcardsand/orroutingcards.Existingequipmentwillbeevaluatedforuserconstituencyandloadingbeforerequiringupgradestofitthepreliminarydesign.

-AllnetworkdeviceswillbeISLcapableandtrunkingwillbeimplementedbetweenthesedeviceswhenLayer2connectivityisimplemented.

-Layer2connectionsbetweenswitchesforDevelopProductwillconsistof2Gbpsfibertrunk/channels.

-Layer2connectionsbetweenswitchesforDevelopProductwillconsistof21Gbpsroutedconnections.

-AllnetworkdeviceswillinterconnectutilizingGigEconnectionsunlessotherwisenoted.

-AllserverswillconnectusingGigEconnections.

-Allworkstationswill,initially,connectusing10/100Mbpsconnections.

PreliminaryDesigns

DevelopProductDataCenterEnvironment

TheDevelopProductDataCenterenvironmentconsistsofthreeCisco6509seriesswitches,eachpopulatedwithdualsupervisorcards,dualpowersupplies,dualMSFCcardsandfive16portGigEcards.TwoslotsareleftopenoneachchassisallowingforsomeGigEexpansionaswellasatleastoneslotrequiredforthefuturebackplanefabricexpansion.Becauseofthenumberofrequiredserverconnections,theinclusionofaDistributionlayerbetweenserversandtheCore/Distributionswitchesisnotrequired.

Eachofthe6509switcheswillconnecttotheHighSpeedBackbone(includedaspartoftheNon-DevelopProductEnvironment),toserversandtobuildingDistributionlayerswitches.Atthispoint,estimatedGigEconnectionsforeachchassisarelistedbelow.

Switcheshavebeenconfiguredwiththe16GigEportboard.ThishasbeendonetoreducetherequirementforaDistributionlayerofswitchesbetweentheCoreandtheservers.

Core/Distributionswitcheswillbeinterconnectedusingtrunking/channelinginthefollowingmanner.

TrunkingontheCore/DistributionswitcheswillbeconfiguredtosupportaSpanningTree,HSRPandDNSfunctionimplementationthatwillprovidetheshortestpathfromclientVLANtoprimaryserverVLAN.Thiswillalsoentailplanningthedatasetdistributiononserverstolevelprimaryserverconnectionsacrossasmanyserversasreasonable.

RoutingwillbeperformedattheCore/Distributionlayeronly.RoutedratherthantrunkedconnectionswillbemadefromtheCore/DistributionlayerswitchestotheHighSpeedBackbone(HSB).ItisanticipatedthatdualconnectionsfromeachoftheCore/DistributionswitcheswillbeimplementedtoeachoftheHSBrouter/switches.Thisisshownbelow.

BecauseoftherelativelyfewnumberofconnectionstheserversaredirectlyattachedtotheCore/Distributionswitches.EachserverisattachedviaoneormoreGigEconnectionstooneormoreswitch.IfthenumberofrequiredserverconnectionsexceedstheaggregateofavailableportsatthecoreaverticallayerofswitcheswillbeaddedbetweentheserversandtheCore/Distributionswitches.ThepurposeofthislayerofswitchesistoconsolidatetrafficsothatportoneveryserverhasaminimumLayer2pathtothecorewithoutrequiringapotentiallylengthyLayer3paththroughthecoreswitches.

TheCore/DistributionswitcheswillattachtoDistributionswitchesthatwillinturnattachtoAccesslayerswitches.TheDistributionlayerswitchesarerequiredbecauseofthenumberofAccesslayerswitchesthatmustbesupported.ThelocalCore/DistributionswitcheswillconnecttotheDistributionlayerviatwotrunked/channeledGigEfiberconnections.TherearethreesetsofDistributionswitchesinthelocalVEC/Towerbuilding.Assumingthata4Gbpschannelwillprovidedoublethethroughputthen40+AccessswitchescouldbesupportedonasingleDistributionlayerswitchusinga4fiberruntoeachCore/Distributionswitchinsteadofthe2fiberrun.Oversubscriptionoftheswitchbecomesaconcernthen.Distributionlayerswitches,thatareinremotebuildingssuchasEngineeringandattachtotheHSB,willroutetoeachCore/Distributionswitchviatwofibers.Thisisdescribedthesectioncalled“RemoteBuildingConnectivity”.

HSRPwillbedesignedandimplementedontheCore/Distributionswitchestosupportworkstationdefaultgatewayfunctions.UntilaDistributionlayerisrequiredbetweenserversandtheCore/Distributionlayer,itisrecommendedthatanyredundantserverlinksbeattachedtothesameswitchastheprimary.InthiscaseHSRPisnotrequiredtosupportIPsubnetsonservers.ShouldanentireCore/Distributionswitchfailresultinginthelossofserversubnets,DNSfunctionswillberequiredfortheworkstationtoselectanotherIPsubnettoconnecttotheserver.

Non-DevelopProductDataCenterEnvironment

Thisenvironmentiscomposedoftwopieces–theconsolidatedserverenvironmentandtheHSB.TheHSBisrepresentedattwolocationsontheWarrencampus.Onesiteisat7000ChicagoandtheotherisintheDataCenter.TheprimarydifferencebetweenthetwoisthattheDataCenterisalsothelocationforconsolidationofserversfortheregion.InmanywaysthissitestronglyresemblestheCore/DistributionlayerforDevelopProduct.ThenumberofserverconnectionsisjustattheedgeofrequiringafullDistributionlayerbetweentheserversandtheHSB.Forthatreason,twooptionsaredescribedfortheDataCenter

ThisoptionimplementsaDistributionlayerofthree6509switches,withoutMSFCbutfullyredundantotherwise,betweenserversandtheroutingdevicesrepresentingtheHighSpeedBackbone.Thi
