“Hungerisn’tcontrolledmerelybythephysicalcharacteristicsofarecentmeal.Wehaveidentifiedanindependentroleformemoryforthatmeal.”Brunstromsays.“Thisshowsthattherelationshipbetweenhungerandfoodintakeismorecomplexthanwethought.”

Thesefindingsechoearlierresearchthatsuggestsourperceptionoffoodcansometimestrickourbody’sresponsetothefooditself.Ina2016study,forinstance,peoplewhodrankthesame380caloriemilkshakeontwoseparateoccasionsproduceddifferentlevelsofhunger-relatedhormones(荷尔蒙),dependingonwhethertheshake’slabelsaiditcontained620or140calories.Moreover,theparticipantsreportedfeelingmorefillwhentheythoughtthey’dconsumedahigher-caloricshake.
