Abstract
Thenovel,TheCatcherintheRye,isamasterpiecewrittenbyJeromeDavidSalinger.HoldenCaulfield,theprotagonist,isinmanywaysatypicalteenagerofthecomplicatedandparadoxicalyouth.Insteadofhisroleanalyzedbysomecriticsasarepresentativeof“anti-hero”or“non-hero”,heisinfactarebelliousheroagainstthemainstreamculture.Idemonstratemyviewsinaccordancewiththedescriptionsandincidentsinsomechaptersandtrytoreconstructanew“Holden”fromtheperspectiveofHero.
Inthisessay,anewperspectiveisemployedfortheanalysisofHoldenCaulfieldinSalinger’snoveltheCatcherintheRye,theperspectiveofHero.HoldenCaulfieldusedtoberegardedasaprototypeof“non-hero”and“anti-hero”bymanycritics.Basedonthetext,IfindthatHoldenCaulfieldis,infact,aheroagainstthemainstreamculture.Consideringthedefinitionof“non-hero”and“anti-hero”,Holdenshowsnotypicalfeaturesof“non-hero”and“anti-hero”.

《麦田里的守望者》是美国作家杰罗姆·大卫·塞林格代表作。
小说甫一问世,主人公霍尔顿的经历和思想在青少年中引起强烈共鸣。
诚如一千个读者心中有一千个哈姆雷特一般,人们在从不同的角度对此书作出不同的评价的同时,对主人公霍尔顿的形象也有不同的解构。
长久以来,尽管各方评论不同,看法各异,但绝大部分都从“非英雄”(non-hero)和“反英雄”(anti-hero)的角度作出解读,认为主人公霍尔顿实际上是个“垮掉分子”,是最早出现的“反英雄”。
一些“非英雄”(non-hero)和“反英雄”(anti-hero)的反叛方式则集中体现了主人公“非英雄”(non-hero)和“反英雄”(anti-hero)的人物形象。
本论文持不同意见,基于小说文本分析,认为霍尔顿的言行举止并没有试图去“非英雄”(non-hero)或“反英雄”(anti-hero),也并不具备“非英雄”(non-hero)和“反英雄”(anti-hero)的典型特征。
因此,本文将主人公纳入“英雄”的视域中进行重构。

JeromeDavidSalingerisanimportantwriterinthepost-warAmericanliterature.HismasterpieceTheCatcherintheRyeisconsideredtobea“modernclassic”.Thenovelisnarratedbyasixteenyear-oldboywhowaskickedoutbecauseofhisflunkingfoursubjectsandnotapplyinghimselfatall.Itistheforthtimeofhisbeingexpelledfromschoolduetohisfailuresinstudy,thushedarenottogohomedirectlyanddecidestotakearoominahotelinNewYorkandtakesiteasytillWednesdaywhenhethinkshewoundbeallrestedupandfeelingwellandmoreimportantlyhisparentswoundgettheletterandthoroughlydigestit.DuringhiswanderingaroundNewYork,heencounterslotsofridiculousthingsandhypocriticalpersons,amongwhomaretwonuns,hisyoungersisterPhoebe,aprostitute,hisformerteacherandmanyothers.Incontactingandcommunicatingwiththesepeople,hefindsthattheworld,especiallytheadults,isfilledwithphoniesandhecouldnotadjusthimselftoit.Attheendofthestory,heentersintoamentalhospital.
ThenovelTheCatcherintheRyehasachievedalot.Ithasbeenregardedtobeoneofthebestinthe20thcenturyandhasbeeninthefocusofpublicandcriticalattention.However,asaclassicbutcontroversialnovel,it,sincethepublicationofthenovel,hasprovokedastormofargumentsonthevariousgrounds,suchasitscontent,itsthemeanditslanguage,especiallytheprotagonistHoldenCaulfield.
R.JohnHuberandGailLedbetter(2003)statedintheessayHoldenCaulfield,Self-AppointedCatcherintheRye:
SomeAdditionalThoughtsthatHoldenCaulfieldisaprototypeoftheAdlerianconceptofmaladjustmentsinceevenacursoryinspectionofSalinger’sclassiccharacterrevealsdeep-seatedinferiorityfeelingsandcompensatorystrivingforgrandiosity.Thentheyexploredfurtherandconcludedthatinsteadofadashinghero,however,Holdenisacaricatureofa“realman”basedontheseso-calledfactsthatHolden’sattempttobesuave,hisfrequentofferstobuyacocktailforthosehemeetsandsoonsoforth.Moreover,theyattachedthelabelof“neurotic”toHoldenCaulfieldwhospeakshighlyofhimselfabovethemankindanddevaluesanyoneelseputsthemintheshade.Inotherwords,theydidn’tviewhimfromtheperspectiveofhero,butfromtheperspectiveofnon-herooranti-hero,evenneurotic(Zhang,2004:
158).
AnothercommentbyCynthia(2002)goeslikethis:
Hemingway’sTheSunAlsoRiseswastotheLostGenerationwhileSalinger’sTheCatcherintheRyewastotheChildrenofthe1950’sand1960’s.CynthiaobviouslyestablishessomerelationsbetweenHoldenandtheLostGeneration,andoneoftherelationsisHolden’s“child-as-refuge”identity.Similarly,theperspectiveofnon-herooranti-heroisemployedhereforthedeconstructingofHolden.
ThisstormofcriticsonTheCatcherintheRyehasneverbeengoingoninwesterncountries.InChina,ithasgainedthemomentumasatrendofcriticsformorethantwentyyears.Mr.ShiXianrong(1982),thefirstonetranslatingthenovelintoChinese,wasalsooneofthepioneerswhoexploredthethemeandsomeotherthingsaboutthenovel.HesetthetonethatTheCatcherintheRyeshouldbeviewedasamasterpieceoftheLostGenerationinhisbookASurveyofAmericanModernLiterature.Thisinitialcommentstartedatideofcriticsonthenovel.AndMr.Shiexpressedhisidea,thoroughlyandcompletely,thatHoldenCaulfieldwasaleadingfigureappearingonthesceneasaprototypeofanti-hero,whichwasinferredfromhisself-contradictorycharactertingedwithsomequalitiesofexistentialism(Shi,1993:
426-449).Theseinferenceshaveexertedafar-reachinginfluenceonlatecomers.
LaiGanjian(1995)expoundedontheconceptof“anti-hero”indetailinhisessay,Anti-heroAsAMostImportantThemeofthePost-ModernLiterature.Lackofqualitiesoftypicaltraditionalheroes,likeanimatedcourage,perseverance,pursuitoftruthsandhisbeingcaughtinthelimbomadeHoldenaprototypeofanti-hero.
Therearealotofessaysdiscussingthethemeofthenovel,mostofwhicharebasedonwhatMr.ShiandMr.LaihasclaimedandanincreasingnumberofcriticstrytodeconstructtheprotagonistHoldenCaulfield.“SalingerandhisHoldeninevitablyfallintothecategoryofBeatGenerationand‘anti-hero’or‘non-hero’,ifnot,thatis,theyarenotsobeattothedegreewheretheymaybeaddictedintodrinkingandsmokinglike'hippies”(Shi,1993:
426-449).
Whileanewperspective,theperspectiveofHero,isemployedinthepresentpaperfortheanalysisofHoldenCaulfieldinSalinger’snoveltheCatcherintheRye.
