Today,severaloftheworld’snearly7000languagesfaceaseroiusriskofextinction.“Forexample,Ainu,alanguageinJapan,isnowseriouslythreatened,withonly10nativespeakersleft,”saidleadstudyauthorTatsuyaAmanoattheUniversityofCambridgeinEngland.

Thescientistsfoundthat25percentoftheworld’slanguagesarethreatened.Afteridentifyingwheretheendangeredlanguageswere,theylookedforanyenvironmental,socialoreconomicfactorsthoselanguagesmighthaveincommon,suchasruggedterrainorrapidpopulationgrowth.“Wefoundthatonaglobalscale,languagespeakerdeclinesarestronglylinkedtoeconomicgrowth-thatis,declinesareparticularlyoccurringineconomicallydevelopedregions,”Amanosaid.

“OneimportantimplicationofthisnewstudyisthatlanguagesinthetropicsandtheHimalayanregionarelikelytobeincreasinglythreatenedinthenearfuture,becausetheseregionsstillhavemanylocalindigenous(土生土长的)languageswithasmallnumberofspeakers,andatthesametimeareexperiencingrapideconomicgrowth,”Amanosaid.

Economicgrowthmayendangerlanguagesforavarietyofreasons.Forinstance,speakersofendangeredlanguagesmayviewanothermoredominantlanguageasofferingeconomicopportunities,andthusgiveuptheirownlanguages.Thereareotherimportantfactorsthatmightendangerlanguages,theresearcherssaid.Forinstance,policiesregardinghowlanguagesareusedandtaughtinschoolscanbeverydifferentamongcountriesandevenwithineachcountry,andthesefactorsmayexplainmoredetailedpatternsinlanguageendangerment.

Amanosuggesteditcouldbepossibletoforecastfuturethreatstolinguisticdiversity.“Thereexistsdetailedinformationaboutprojectedfuturechangesintheenvironment,economiesandclimates,”Amanosaid.“Usingsuchinformation,togetherwiththefindingsofthisstudyandfurtheranalys
