　　training.

　　Yetthereshouldnotbeanylossoradditionordistortioninthe

　　Chinaisnowactivelyintegratingintothe

　　world.OurrecententrytotheWTOisagood

　　example.Fordecades,wehavetakenprideinbeingself-reliant,butnowwerealizetheimportanceofparticipatinginandcontributingtoabroadereconomic

　　order.FromaprecariousroleintheworldarenatoourpresentWTOmembership,wehavecomealong

　　way.

　　Butwhatdoesthewayaheadlooklike?

　　Insomepartsoftheworldpeoplearedemonstratingagainst

　　globalization.Aretheyjustified,then,incriticizingtheglobalizingworld?

　　Insteadofnarrowingthegapbetweentherichandthepoor,theysay,globalizationenablesthedevelopednationstoswallowthedevelopingnations’wealthindebtsand

　　interest.Globalization,theyargue,shouldbeaboutacommoninterestineveryothernation’seconomic

　　health.

　　WeareremindedbyKarlMarxthatcapitalgoesbeyondnationalbordersandeludescontrolfromanyother

　　entity.Thishasbecomea

　　reality.Multinationalcorporationsareseekingthelowestcost,thelargestmarket,andthemostfavourable

　　policy.Theyareoftenpowerfullobbyistsingovernmentdecision-making,ruthlessexpansionistsintheglobalmarketandadevastatingpresencetolocal

　　businesses.

　　ForChina,stillmorechallenges

　　exist.Howarewegoingtoensureasmoothtransitionfromtheplannedeconomytoamarket-basedone?

　　Howtoconstructalegalsystemthatissoundenoughandbroadenoughtorespondtotheneedsofadynamicsociety?

　　Howtomaintainourculturalidentityinanincreasinglyhomogeneousworld?

　　Andhowtodefinegreatnessinourriseasapeace-lovingnation?

　　Globalizationentailsquestionsthatconcernus

　　all.LikemanyyoungpeoplemyageinChina,Iwanttoseemycountrygetprosperousandenjoyrespectintheinternational

　　community.Butitseemstomethatmerepatriotismisnotjust

　　enough.Itisvitallyimportantthatweyoungpeopledomoreseriousthinkingandbroadenourmindtobigger

　　issues.Theremightneverbeeasyanswerstothoseissuessuchasglobalization,buttotakethemonandgivethemhonestthinkingisthefirststeptobepreparedforbothopportunitiesandchallengescomingour
