Therearesome7,000languagesspokenintheworld,andhalfofthemcouldbegoneby2100.Torescuetheselanguages,twolinguistsdecidedtouseacombinationofdigitalrecordingtechnologyandtheInternet.K.DavidHarrisonandGregoryAndersonarecompilingwhattheycall"talkingdictionaries."Someofthelanguagestheyrecordedhaveneverbeendocumentedbefore.In2010,theymadethefirstrecordingsofKoro,forexample,alanguagespokenbyonlyafewhundredpeopleinnortheasternIndia.

Thedictionariessofarcontainmorethan32,000wordentriesineightendangeredlanguages,withover24,000audiorecordingsofnativespeakerspronouncingwordsandsentences.Someoftheworkisavailableonline.Inonecase,acommunityinPapuaNewGuineathatspeaksalanguagecalledMatukarPanau,withonly600speakers,askedthatthelanguagebeputontheInterneteventhoughitwasonlyinthelasttwoyearsthattheirvillagereceivedelectricity.

AnotherexampleisChamacoco,spokeninParaguaybyonly1,200people.IntheUnitedStates,theteamisworkingwiththeConfederatedTribesofSiletzIndiansinOregononrevivingtheirlanguage.Evenlanguagesthathavewrittenformscanbeendangered:

oneofthegroupsHarrisonandAndersonworkwithspeaksHo,whichisspokenbyamillionpeopleintheIndianstateofJharkhand.Thepeoplewhospeakithavebeenunderpressuretoassimilatewiththelargertonguesthatsurroundit.

Harrison,associateprofessoroflinguisticsatSwarthmoreCollege,andAnderson,presidentoftheLivingTonguesInstituteforEndangeredLanguages,arepresentingtheirworktodayattheannualmeetingoftheAmericanAssociationfortheAdvancementofScience(AAAS)inVancouver,BritishColumbia.Preservinglanguagecanbecomeanimportantpartofpreservingtheculturesofsmallerandmarginalizedgroups.Livinglanguagesalsotellscientistsalotaboutthepastevolutionoflanguageitself.
