Abstract

Cultureisoneofthemostimportantpartsofanation,anditalsoplaystheimportantrolehelpingthedevelopmentofhumancivilization.Underthebackgroundofeconomicglobalization,cultureglobalizationhasbeengraduallyestablishedinthepast,culturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandAmericanhasbeenbecomingmoreandmorefrequent.Duringtheculturalcommunicationoftwocountries,culturalcollisionandimpactofeachotherareunavoidable.MoreandmoreChinesepeopleareinfluencedbyAmericancultureaswell.

Takinganyindexfromclothestofood,musictoTVshows,themassivepresenceofAmericanculturalgoodscanbefoundineverycornerofChina.Amongthesepeople,Chineseteenagersaregettingthiscultureimpactmoredeeply.Teenagersarethemostactivegroupofthesociety.Theyareeasytoacceptnewideasandareeagertotrynewthings.ThispaperwillfocusonAmericanculture’simpactonChineseteenagersindetailedaspectsunderthebackgroundoftheculturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandAmerica.

摘要

文化是一个民族必要的组成部分之一，也是一个民族孕育一种文明的基础。

在全球经济化的推动下，文化全球化也逐渐建立起来，中美两国的文化交流也日益增多，在两国的文化交流中，文化的冲击与碰撞也日益突显出来。

越来越多的中国人开始受到美国文化的影响。

从服装到餐饮，从音乐到电视节目，美国文化对中国人的影响体现在方方面面，在这些人中，中国青少年受到的影响最为强烈。

青少年是中国社会中最具活力的特殊群体，喜欢新鲜事物，渴望体验不同的生活。

本篇论文旨在阐述在中美文化交流日益加深的背景下，美国文化对中国青少年的影响，以及这种文化的具体影响表现在哪些方面。

1.Introduction

Intheearly1830s,AmericaandChinahadculturaltransmissions.Fromtheendofthe19thcenturytothemiddleof20thcentury,someChinesestudentschosetostudyandworkintheUnitedStates.Withtheappearanceanddevelopmentofeconomicglobalization,culturalglobalizationstartedaswell.Therefore,peoplecometoattachmoreimportancetoculturalrelationsbetweendifferentcountries.ChinaandAmericahaveacloserelationshipwitheachotherinmanyareas,politics,economyandespeciallyculturecommunication.ThecultureimpactandcollisionbetweenChinaandAmericaisbecomingmoreandmoreprominent.Nowadays,moreandmoreChinesepeopleareinfluencedbyAmericancultureineveryaspect.Chineseteenagershavebeeninfluencedthemost,especiallyinthewaysofdiet,dressingstyleandleisureactivities.

ThispaperattemptstoexploretheculturaldifferencesbetweenAmericaandChina.Becauseofthedifferences,thispaperaimsatgivingananalysisofAmericanculture’simpactonChineseteenagers.

ThispaperwillfirstlygiveabriefexplanationonthefeaturesofAmericancultureandChineseculture.Secondly,thispaperwilltrytodemonstratethedetaileddescriptiononculturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandAmerica.UndertheculturaldifferencesandimpactsofAmericancultureonChina,thefourthpartwillofferanoverviewofhowtheAmericanculturehasinfluencedChineseteenagers.Thispartwilldealwiththeaspectofdiet,theaspectofdressingstyleandtheaspectofleisureactivities.Finally,aconclusionwillbemadeofthispaper.

2.BriefexplanationonthefeaturesofAmericancultureandChineseculture

Massculturecameintobeingasaculturephenomenoninthewestinthe1930sor1940s.Fromthebeginning,ithasbeendevelopingquicklybecauseofitsfeatures,suchasitsindustrialization,commercialization,popularization,entertainmentandfashion.Cultureincludesknowledge,belief,art,morality,law,andmanyotherthings.Differentnations,differentsocietiesanddifferentcountrieshavedifferentculture.

2.1ThefeaturesofAmericanculture

Americancultureisoneofthemostimportantpartsofworldculture.Americaisthelargestimmigrationcountryintheworld.Itiscomposedbymanyimmigrantsfromallovertheworld.Differentpeoplefromdifferentcountrieshavedifferentculturebackgrounds.TheintegrationofdifferentculturalbackgroundsformedtheUnitedStates,andafullyintegrationculturehasbeenstayingformanyyears.

TheimmigrantshavebroughtthefreshnesstoAmericanculture.ThemixoftheoriginalAmericancultureandtheothermultinationalculturehasmadeamoreabundantAmericancultureinsteadofacommonmixture.ThisisthereasonwhywecallAmericaauniquecountry.AndthefeaturesofAmericanculturemustbedifferentandinthefollowingfeatureswillbeexplained.

Firstly,Americancultureisthecombinationoftraditionalcultureandmodernculture.ItsrootisintheEurope,butafterabsorbingothermultinationalculture,itformeditsownculturewhichisdifferentfromanyotherculture.AmericancultureisnotonlytheinheritanceandinnovationofEuropeantraditionalculture,butalsoreformoftheEuropeantraditionalcultureandhasitsownwayinmoderntimes.

Secondly,meltingpotisagoodwordtodescribeAmericanculture,themeaningofthiswordistoshowthatAmericanculturecanfusedifferentculturewhichcomesfromdifferentplaces.Afteralongperiodofintegration,peoplefromdifferentculturesformedanewAmericanculturewhichisdifferentfromotherculture.

Thirdly,everygreatcivilizationorculture,whetherancientormodern,hasleftbehinditanumberofvaluablelegacies,bothmaterialandspiritual（Zhou,2010,p.61）.ToChinese,theGreatWall,thedragon,tea,silkandporcelainsymbolizetheChineseculture.AstotheUnitedStatesofAmerica,itisayoungandmoderncivilizationthathasalsoleftvaluablelegaciestohumanstoday.

Culturecanbeobservedandmanifestedfromdifferentperspectives,differentdimensionsordifferenthistoricalstrata（Maxine&Donald,2009,p.174）.Ifseenfromculturesymbols,theAmericanculture,allegedly,canberepresentedbythesesymbolsbelow:

theStatueofLiberty,UncleSam,andtheBarbieDoll.TheyrepresentAmericancultureindifferentaspects.TheyenrichtheAmericancultureandmaketheAmericanculturebecomemoreandmoreplentiful.

2.2ThefeaturesofChineseculture

China is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a history of more than 5,000 yearsandformeditsownfeatures.ChinesecivilizationisembodiedthepowerofChinesecultureinthenationalvitality,thenationalcohesion,thenationalcreativity.Throughthousandsof yearsofcultivationandcreation,aswellastheabsorptionandmeltingofexoticculturalelements,Chineseculturehasdevelopedtoaverymatureformuptodate.Generallyspeaking,ChinesepeoplelivealifedistinctfromAmericansinthattheypursuesuchqualitiesasconformitytonature,harmony,andplainlivingasopposedtoconquestofnature,individualityandmaterialluxury.

Inthefirstplace,theterm“agriculture”asamodeofproduction,orasawayofeconomiclifeshapesoneofthemostimportantfeaturesofChineseculture.Comparedwiththelifeoftradesmenandherdsmen,afarmer’slifeisrelativelyfixedandsettled.Thiskindof“attachedtoearth”and“dependentonland”attitudesalsoaccountforsomemoralqualitiesoftheChinesepeople.InmanyChinesepeople’seyes,thestyleoflifeshouldbestableinsteadofbeingrisky.

Secondly,anaturalisticviewoflifeisthedirectoffspringoftheagriculturalsociety.Farmersworkonlandintheopenairratherthanworkingonpapersinanenclosedair-conditionedoffice.Closenesstonatureanddirectcontactwithplantsandanimalseasilydevelopanaturalisticviewoflifewhichishardlyfoundinanindustrializedsociety.Theprincipleofsimplicityfollowscloselythenaturalisticviewoflife.AnaveragepersoninmodernAmericansocietycanownanautomobile,ahomewithair-conditioning,heating,refrigerator,washer,dryer,andmanyotherappliancesinthekitchen.ButfromtheChineseviewpoint,thepossessionofthesetechnologicaldeviceswillgeneratetensionandanxietyratherthanhappiness.

Itwasaboutfiftyyearsago,anAmericanscholarmadeaverypenetratingremarkonChinesewayoflifesaying:

“TheChinesewayoflookingatlifewasnotprimarilythroughreligion,orphilosophy,orscience,butthroughart”（George,1947,p.3）.Inspiteofitsapparentexaggeration,thisisaveryinsightfulcharacteristicofChineseculture.

Thirdly,aftersomesuperficialcontactwithChineseculture,awesternercaneasilygettheimpressionthatChinesepeopleareconservative.ComparingwithAmericanculture,conservatismmaynotbeacceptedinAmerica.ButforChineseculture,beingconservativecanbeapositivevirtue.Chineseconservatismisshapedbytwoculturaltraitswhichhavebeendiscussed.Thefirstoneistheagriculturaleconomicfoundation,andthesecondone,itsartisticwayoflife.

Fourthly,sincetheexistenceofthehumanrace,familyisprobablythemostfundamentalsocialunit.ButithasplayedanunusuallysignificantroleinChineseculture.InacontemporarywesternsocietylikeAmerica,anindividualisliableforhisowndebtsorhisownmisconduct.ButintraditionalChina,privilegesandliabilities,honorandshame,andevencrimesofonesingleindividualweresharedwithhisfamily.

Lastly,theprinciplesofmoderationandharmonyareanimportantpartofChineseculture.Beingshapedbyagriculturalism,artisticviewoflife,andperhapsotherculturalinclinations,Chinesepeoplehavedevelopedthecharacterofavoidingextremesorone-sidedness.InmostChinesepeopleeyes,theprincipleofmoderationandharmonyisaruleofbeingincontactwithothers.

3.DetaileddescriptiononculturalcommunicationbetweenChinaandAmerica
