In1950，GwendolynBrooksbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantowinthePulitzerPrizeforPoetry.ShewontheprizeforhersecondbookofpoemscalledAnnieAllen.AnnieAllenisacollectionofpoetryaboutthelifeofaBronzevillegirlasadaughter，awifeandmother.Sheexperiencesloneliness，loss，deathandbeingpoor.MsBrookssaidthatwinningtheprizechangedherlife.
Hernextworkwasanovelwrittenin1953calledMaudMartha.MaudMarthareceivedlittlenoticewhenitwasfirstpublished.Butnowitisconsideredanimportantworkbysomecritics.Itsmainideasaboutthedifficultlifeofmanywomenarepopularamongfemalewriterstoday.
