1.Introduction

Asweallknow,Englishiswidelyspokenintoday’sworld.Inmanycountries,itisusedastheirmothertongueorofficiallanguage.Withthedevelopmentofglobaleconomyandculture,theinternationalcommunicationisbecomingmoreandmorefrequent.Asacommonlyusedlanguage,itisnecessaryfornon-nativeEnglishspeakerstohaveagoodcommandofEnglishspeaking,listening,vocabularyandinterculturalcommunication.

Meanwhile,inChina,asaforeignlanguage,Englishisoneoftheobligatorycourseseachstudenthasbeenlearningfromprimarytocollege.Also,ChinesegovernmentattachesgreatimportancetothestudyofEnglish.

However,thecurrentsituationofChinesestudents’learningEnglishisnotsooptimisticthatmoreandmoreproblemshavebeenarising,suchasinaccuratepronunciations,lackofinterests,inadequatepracticeofspeakingandlisteningandinappropriateEnglishuse.Tosolvealltheseproblems,aneffectiveEnglishlearningmethodisurgentlyneeded.Englishlearningisindeedinfluencedbymanyfactors.Amongthem,motivationandlearningstrategiesaretwomainfactors(Tao,2012;Zhouetal.,2005).背景

IntheprofessionalliteratureofEnglishlanguageeducation,therearelotsofdiscussionsabouttherelationshipbetweenlearningEnglishandwatchingEnglishmovies(Jane,2002;Lin,2009;Wood,1995).PeoplegenerallythinkthatwatchingEnglishmoviescanimproveChinesestudents'skillsoflistening,speaking,readingandwriting,aswellasleaningmotivation.However,littleempiricalresearchhasbeenconductedabouttherealvalueandsignificanceofmovie-watchinginChinesestudents'Englishlanguagelearning.

Thus,theauthordidasurveybyusingquestionnairestoexplorestudents’attitudestowardslearningEnglishbywatchingEnglishmoviesandinvestigatethecurrentsituationofstudentsforusingEnglishmoviesintheirEnglishlearning.Also,itintendstoseekforsomeavailablemethodsfromstudentsaboutintroducingEnglishmoviesinEnglishlearning.

Theresultofthisstudywill,tosomeextent,provideimplicationsforteachingandlearningEnglishasaforeignlanguageintheChinesecontext.

Thiswholethesisconsistsoffiveparts.Thefirstchapterisanintroductionofthisthesiswhichpresentsthebackground,purpose,significanceaswellastheorganizationofthethesis.Thesecondchaptergivesareviewofthetheoreticalbasisofthestudysurvey.Thethirdchapterdealswiththedesignandmethodologyofthisstudysurvey.Itdescribesquestionsofthequestionnaire,subjectsofthestudysurveyandmethodsfordatacollection.Thefourthchapterpresentstheresultandstatisticaldataofthequestionnairesanddiscussionsofthedata.ThelastchaptergivesaconclusionofthestudysurveyanddiscussessomeimplicationsforEnglishlearning,inaddition,pointsoutthelimitationofthestudysurvey.

2.LiteratureReview

Havingintroducedthebackground,purposeandsignificanceofthethesis,theauthorwillreviewsomerelatedtheoreticalbasisofthethesis.RegardingthetopicofwatchingEnglishmoviestofacilitateEnglishlearningofChinesestudents,therelatedliteraturediffersinfocus,butinthisthesis,theauthorwillpresenttheliteratureintwosections.SectiononeisabouttheideathatlearningEnglishbywatchingEnglishmoviescanarousestudents’motivationforEnglishlearning.SectiontwoisthefocusoftheideathatwatchingEnglishmoviescanimprovestudents’abilitiesinlearningEnglish.WatchingEnglishmoviesisoneofeffectivelearningstrategies.

2.1EnglishMoviesandStudents’LearningMotivation

Inthebook,ANewConciseCourseonLinguisticsforStudentsofEnglish,motivationisdefinedasthelearner’sattitudesandaffectivestateorlearningdrive.Ithasastrongimpactonlearningaforeignlanguage(Zhouetal.,2005).Learningmotivationistheinternalcauseforpromotingstudents'learningactivities.Itisalsothegreatpowertoguidestudent’slearning.Students'learningactivitiesarecausedbyvariouskindsofmotivation.Thepsychologicalfactorsinclude:

learningneed,cognitionforleaningnecessity,interestoflearningandhobbiesorhabits(Zhouetal.,2005).

Thethingswhichmeetone’sneedsalwayscausehisorherpositiveemotions.Asoneofthepsychologicalfactors,interestisoneofthosepositiveemotions(Yi,2011;Zhouetal.,2005).Itisthepsychologicaltendencyforcausingstudents’learningactivities.Furthermore,itistheinnerpowerthatpromotesstudentstolearnthingsbythemselves.Therefore,ifstudentshaveinterestsinlearningEnglish,theywillcheerfullydevotethemselvestotheirstudyandexploration.

Actually,movieisaspecialkindofelectronicmedia,whichcombinessoundswithvideos,makingthetransferofinformationinacolorfulandvividway.Englishmoviesprovidealargeamountofvividandfreshlanguageinformation,whichchangesthedullEnglishlearningactivitiesintoanenjoyableprocess.Meanwhile,sinceEnglishmoviescombineEnglishlearningandentertainmentstogether,theycanprovidealargenumberofsoundandvisualmaterials.Thus,students’interestofEnglishlearningcanbegreatlyimproved(Li,2010;Liu,2011).Besides,withstudents’greatlearninginterest,Englishmoviescanfurtherarousestudents’learningmotivationforEnglishlearning.Therefore,watchingEnglishmoviescanberegardedasahelpfulwayinarousingstudents’learningmotivation.

2.2EnglishMoviesandEnglishLearningStrategies

InChina,theresearchonlearningstrategiesstartedafterthe1970s.Foroverthirtyyears,manyresearchers(Zhouetal.,2005)thinkthattheeffectiveuseofEnglishlearningstrategyplaysadrivingroleinthedevelopmentoflearners’learningabilityandtheirperformance.Scientificandefficientlearningstrategiesaretheguaranteeofsuccessfullearning.WatchingEnglishmoviesprovetobeoneofeffectiveEnglishlearningstrategiesinimprovingstudents’skilloflistening,speaking,vocabularyandinterculturalcommunication(Li,2011).

2.2.1EnglishMoviesandListeningLearningStrategies

Inlanguagelearning,listeningisanimportantcomponent.Humanbrainhasitsownwaytowork,andonlywithgreatamountofinputinformationcouldithavesomeproductions.Thematerialslearnerschooseforlisteningisessential.Scientificresearchesindicatedthatbrainisbetteratrememberingvoicesandimagesratherthanwordsandsignals(Zhouetal.,2005).

Inotherwords,materialswithvoicesandimagearemoreappropriateforstudents’listening.Besides,listeningmaterialswithproperdifficultyandspeakingspeedshouldbechosen.Englishmovieswithacombinationofsoundsandimagesshowthereallifeofnativespeakers,makinglearnersfamiliarwiththeirrealspeakingspeed(Zhang,2011).Inthelongrun,learningEnglishbywatchingmovieslaysagoodfoundationforlearnerstounderstandandcommunicatewithpeoplefromEnglishspeakingcountries.

2.2.2EnglishMoviesandSpeakingLearningStrategies

Speakingisanindispensablepartinourdailylife.Instudyandwork,goodspeakingskillscanhelplearnersexpressthemselvesandunderstandotherswell.Inspeakinglearningstrategies,imitation,paraphrasing,recitinganddiscussionscanincreasethecommunicativeabilitygradually(Zhouetal.,2005).

EnglishmoviesprovidegoodspeechtrainingconditionsforEnglishlearners.EnglishmoviesarethemostappropriatenativespeechmaterialsforEnglishlearners.EnglishmoviesmostlycomefromEnglishlanguagecountrieswiththelivelylanguagerelatedtolife.Whenwatchingmovies,learnerscanheartherealpronunciationandbefamiliarwithpeople’slanguagefeaturesfromdifferentages,careersandeducationbackground.Besides,Englishmoviescontainalargenumberofgoodvocabulariesandidiomaticexpressions.BecauseEnglishmoviesreflectthelifeofdifferentsocialgroups,therearealotofsociallanguagesamongthem,suchasslangsandidioms.

Aslivematerials,Englishmoviesdisplaygoodpronunciation,plentifulidiomsandcommonlyusednativeexpressions,whichareinlinewithEnglishspeakinglearningstrategies.LearningEnglishbywatchingEnglishmoviesisoneofeffectiveEnglishspeakinglearningstrategies(Li,2010;Liu,2011).

2.2.3EnglishMoviesandVocabularyLearningStrategies

Vocabularyreferstothereservoirofallthewordsandfixedphrasesinalanguage(Zhouetal.,2005).Itisoneconstituentelementoflanguage.Wilkins,anEnglishlinguist,oncesaidthatifoneknewtheappropriatevocabularywithoutmuchknowledgeofgrammar,communicationinaforeignlanguagemightnotbeverydifficult,butitwasnexttoimpossiblewithoutvocabulary.Therefore,masteryofenoughvocabularyassistsstudentsinunderstandingothersandexpressingtheirownthoughts(Zhouetal.2011:

43).Therearemanystrategiesforlearningandmemorizingwords,suchasmemorizingwordsaccordingtopronunciation,homophone,similarshape,classification,association,pictureandcollocations(Zhouetal.,2005).

Memorizingwordsbyallsensesisoneofthem.Mostinformationismasteredbyvisionandanotheramountofwordscanbememorizedbysounds.Withcombinationofvisionandsoundtogether,studentscanmemorizemore(Zhouetal.,2005).Englishmoviesprovideanexcellentwayofcontextualizedlearningintheformofvideos,whichcombinevisionwithsounds.Inthissense,watchingEnglishmoviesisoneofeffectivevocabularylearningstrategies.DuringwatchingEnglishmovies,moresensesareinvolvedinthevocabularylearning.Inthisway,studentscaneasilyremembermorewords.

2.2.4EnglishMoviesandInterculturalCommunication
