1.Introduction

Asweallknow,Englishiswidelyspokenintoday’sworld.Inmanycountries,itisusedastheirmothertongueorofficiallanguage.Withthedevelopmentofglobaleconomyandculture,theinternationalcommunicationisbecomingmoreandmorefrequent.Asacommonlyusedlanguage,itisnecessaryfornon-nativeEnglishspeakerstohaveagoodcommandofEnglishspeaking,listening,vocabularyandinterculturalcommunication.

Meanwhile,inChina,asaforeignlanguage,Englishisoneoftheobligatorycourseseachstudenthasbeenlearningfromprimarytocollege.Also,ChinesegovernmentattachesgreatimportancetothestudyofEnglish.

However,thecurrentsituationofChinesestudents’learningEnglishisnotsooptimisticthatmoreandmoreproblemshavebeenarising,suchasinaccuratepronunciations,lackofinterests,inadequatepracticeofspeakingandlisteningandinappropriateEnglishuse.Tosolvealltheseproblems,aneffectiveEnglishlearningmethodisurgentlyneeded.Englishlearningisindeedinfluencedbymanyfactors.Amongthem,motivationandlearningstrategiesaretwomainfactors（Tao,2012;Zhouetal.,2005）.背景

IntheprofessionalliteratureofEnglishlanguageeducation,therearelotsofdiscussionsabouttherelationshipbetweenlearningEnglishandwatchingEnglishmovies（Jane,2002;Lin,2009;Wood,1995）.PeoplegenerallythinkthatwatchingEnglishmoviescanimproveChinesestudents'skillsoflistening,speaking,readingandwriting,aswellasleaningmotivation.However,littleempiricalresearchhasbeenconductedabouttherealvalueandsignificanceofmovie-watchinginChinesestudents'Englishlanguagelearning.

Thus,theauthordidasurveybyusingquestionnairestoexplorestudents’attitudestowardslearningEnglishbywatchingEnglishmoviesandinvestigatethecurrentsituationofstudentsforusingEnglishmoviesintheirEnglishlearning.Also,itintendstoseekforsomeavailablemethodsfromstudentsaboutintroducingEnglishmoviesinEnglishlearning.

Theresultofthisstudywill,tosomeextent,provideimplicationsforteachingandlearningEnglishasaforeignlanguageintheChinesecontext.

Thiswholethesisconsistsoffiveparts.Thefirstchapterisanintroductionofthisthesiswhichpresentsthebackground,purpose,significanceaswellastheorganizationofthethesis.Thesecondchaptergivesareviewofthetheoreticalbasisofthestudysurvey.Thethirdchapterdealswiththedesignandmethodologyofthisstudysurvey.Itdescribesquestionsofthequestionnaire,subjectsofthestudysurveyandmethodsfordatacollection.Thefourthchapterpresentstheresultandstatisticaldataofthequestionnairesanddiscussionsofthedata.ThelastchaptergivesaconclusionofthestudysurveyanddiscussessomeimplicationsforEnglishlearning,inaddition,pointsoutthelimitationofthestudysurvey.

2.LiteratureReview

Havingintroducedthebackground,purposeandsignificanceofthethesis,theauthorwillreviewsomerelatedtheoreticalbasisofthethesis.RegardingthetopicofwatchingEnglishmoviestofacilitateEnglishlearningofChinesestudents,therelatedliteraturediffersinfocus,butinthisthesis,theauthorwillpresenttheliteratureintwosections.SectiononeisabouttheideathatlearningEnglishbywatchingEnglishmoviescanarousestudents’motivationforEnglishlearning.SectiontwoisthefocusoftheideathatwatchingEnglishmoviescanimprovestudents’abilitiesinlearningEnglish.WatchingEnglishmoviesisoneofeffectivelearningstrategies.

2.1EnglishMoviesandStudents’LearningMotivation

Inthebook,ANewConciseCourseonLinguisticsforStudentsofEnglish,motivationisdefinedasthelearner’sattitudesandaffectivestateorlearningdrive.Ithasastrongimpactonlearningaforeignlanguage（Zhouetal.,2005）.Learningmotivationistheinternalcauseforpromotingstudents'learningactivities.Itisalsothegreatpowertoguidestudent’slearning.Students'learningactivitiesarecausedbyvariouskindsofmotivation.Thepsychologicalfactorsinclude:

learningneed,cognitionforleaningnecessity,interestoflearningandhobbiesorhabits（Zhouetal.,2005）.

Thethingswhichmeetone’sneedsalwayscausehisorherpositiveemotions.Asoneofthepsychologicalfactors,interestisoneofthosepositiveemotions（Yi,2011;Zhouetal.,2005）.Itisthepsychologicaltendencyforcausingstudents’learningactivities.Furthermore,itistheinnerpowerthatpromotesstudentstolearnthingsbythemselves.Therefore,ifstudentshaveinterestsinlearningEnglish,theywillcheerfullydevotethemselvestotheirstudyandexploration.

Actually,movieisaspecialkindofelectronicmedia,whichcombinessoundswithvideos,makingthetransferofinformationinacolorfulandvividway.Englishmoviesprovidealargeamountofvividandfreshlanguageinformation,whichchangesthedullEnglishlearningactivitiesintoanenjoyableprocess.Meanwhile,sinceEnglishmoviescombineEnglishlearningandentertainmentstogether,theycanprovidealargenumberofsoundandvisualmaterials.Thus,students’interestofEnglishlearningcanbegreatlyimproved（Li,2010;Liu,2011）.Besides,withstudents’greatlearninginterest,Englishmoviescanfurtherarousestudents’learningmotivationforEnglishlearning.Therefore,watchingEnglishmoviescanberegardedasahelpfulwayinarousingstudents’learningmotivation.

2.2EnglishMoviesandEnglishLearningStrategies

InChina,theresearchonlearningstrategiesstartedafterthe1970s.Foroverthirtyyears,manyresearchers（Zhouetal.,2005）thinkthattheeffectiveuseofEnglishlearningstrategyplaysadrivingroleinthedevelopmentoflearners’learningabilityandtheirperformance.Scientificandefficientlearningstrategiesaretheguaranteeofsuccessfullearning.WatchingEnglishmoviesprovetobeoneofeffectiveEnglishlearningstrategiesinimprovingstudents’skilloflistening,speaking,vocabularyandinterculturalcommunication（Li,2011）.

2.2.1EnglishMoviesandListeningLearningStrategies
