Theoldpoetsarenottheonlywritersofhaiku.TodayJapanesefarmers,shopkeepers,grandparents,andstudentswriteit,andbecauseofitsstrongappeal,haikuiswritteninmanyothercountriesthroughouttheworld.

Interestinglyenough,Japanesepoetryhashadalongandcolorfulhistory.Intheprehaikuperiodintheearlyeighthcentury,Japanesepoetswrotekatauta,poemsinaquestionandanswerform,usingtwopeople.Eachthreelineverse(诗节)containedaboutseventeensyllablesthatcouldbedeliveredeasilyinonebreath—justasonewouldnaturallyaskoransweraquestion.ThishasremainedthebasicpatternfortraditionalJapanesepoetrythroughoutthecenturies.

Anotherformthatappearedwasthetanka,whichcontainedfivelinesandthirtyonesyllables(57577),writtenbyeitheroneortwopersons.Fromthatevolved(发展)therenga,whichcontainedmorethanoneverse,orlink.Writtenbythreeormorepeople,itcouldhaveasmanyas100links!

Thefirstverseoftherengaintroducedasubject.Ithadthreelinesandwascalledthehokku,orstartingverse.Rengapartiesbecameagreatpleasure.

Around1450,haikainorengabecamepopular.Thisstyleoflinkedversecontainedpuns(双关)andwashumorousandamusing.Theopeningthreelineswerestillcalledahokku,andfromhaikaiandhokkuthetermhaikuevolved.
