Normalscannerscanonlyscantheinformationthatisactuallybeforethemonthepage.Thishighspeedbookscannerusesacamerathatcapturespagesat1000fpsastheyareturned.Asystembuiltinallowsittoautomaticallycorrectanychangestothetextduetothepagebendingaswellaslightdifferencesduetoshadows.“Ittakesashotoftheshape,thenitcalculatestheshapeandusesthosecalculationstofilmthescanning,”Ishikawasaid,explainingthesystemusedtoreconstructtheoriginalpage.

Thecurrentsystemisabletoscananaverage250pagebookinaliteover60secondsusingbasiccomputerhardware.Whileitnowrequiresextratimetoprocessthescannedimages(影像),theresearchershopetoeventuallymakethetechnologybothfasterandmuchsmaller.“Inthemoredistantfuture,onceitbecomespossibletoputallofthisprocessingononechip(芯片)andthenputthatinaniPadoriPod,onecouldscanjustusingthatchip.Atthatpoint,itbecomespossibletoscansomethingquicklytosaveforlaterreading,”Ishikawasaid.
