Thetermsporttourismhasbeenadoptedinrecentyearstodescribesport-relatedleisuretravel.Itisgenerallyrecognizedthattherearethreebroadcategoriesofsporttourism.Thefirstcategory,watchingsportingeventsorSportsEventTourismincludeshallmarkeventssuchasFIFAWorldCupFootballChampionships,andtheOlympicgames.TournamentsponsoredbytheProfessionalGolfAssociationortheWorldTennisAssociationarealsopartofthespectator-centeredsectorofsporttourism.

Thesecondtypeofsporttourism,celebrityandnostalgiasporttourisminvolvesvisitingfamoussports-relatedattractions.Visitsofthesportshallsoffamefallintothiscategory.Anotherformofcelebrityandnostalgiasporttourismthathasemergedinrecentyearsismeetingfamoussportspersonalities.Thecruiseindustryhasbeenexperiencedinthisarea.Sportsthemecruisesuchas“theNBAbasketballcruise”arrangeforpassengerstomeetpersonalitiesfromsportswhileonboard.

Activeparticipationisthethirdcategoryofsportstourism.Thisiscomposedofindividualswhotraveltoparticipateingolf,skiing,andtennisinparticular,althoughothersportssuchasfishing,andscubadivingarepopularintheUS.
