1. Ogilvie spat out the words with great contempt and sudden rudeness, throwing away his pretended politeness.

3. The Duchess was supported by her arrogance coming from parents of noble families who belonged to the nobility 

for more than three hundred years. So she did not give in easily. 

4. The Duchess was a good actress and she appeared so firm about their innocent that, for a brief moment, Ogilvie felt unsure if his assumption about them was right. But the moment was very short and passed quickly.
