ThenationwentonafullwartimealertTuesdayafterterroristattacksinNewYorkCityandWashingtonleftanunknownnumberofkilledandwoundedandshookthenationasperhapsnothinghadsincetheJapaneseattackonPearlHarbornearly60yearsago.

“Freedomitselfwasattackedthismorningbyafacelesscoward,andfreedomitselfwillbedefended,”PresidentBushsaidearlyTuesdayafternoon,fromaLouisianaairbasetowhichhehadbeenevacuated.

Deathandinjurytollswerenotimmediatelyavailable,butwereexpectedtoreachperhapsintothethousands.

“Makenomistake-theUnitedStateswillhuntdownandpunishthoseresponsibleforthesecowardlyacts,”Bushsaid.

Therehourslater,CIAsourcessaidtheyhadevidencelinkingOsamabinLaden,Saudi-bornsponsorofIslamicterrorism,totheattacks.

BushspokeafterapparentlyhijackedcommercialairlinersloadedwithpassengerscrashedintobothtwintowersoftheWorldTradeCenterinNewYorkCity,causingthemtocollapse,andthePentagonnearWashingtonduringrushhourTuesdaymorning.Thecoordinatedstrikescamewithoutwarning.

Atabout10:

40a.m.,2hoursafterthecrash,afourthapparentlyhijackedjetcrashednearSomersetCountyAirportnearJohnstown,Pa.FederalofficialsbelieveitwasenroutetoWashingtontoparticipateintheattack.

OfficialsofAmericanandUnitedAirlines,whicheachownedtwoofthejets,reportedthat266peoplewereaboardthefourjets.

TheWorldTradeCenter,amongtheworld’stallestbuildings,hadbeenattackedandpartiallydestroyedbyIslamicterroristsusingatruckbombin1993.

Thefederalgovernmentmovedquicklytoplacethenationonfull-scalesecurityalertcommensuratewithanenemyattack..

Intelligenceofficialssaidthatforatleastthepast10daystheyhadanticipatedapossibleattackbyfollowersofOsamabinLaden,theSaudi-bornfinancierofIslamicterrorgroups.Buttheofficialssaidtheyhadexpectedtheattacks,ifany,tocomeagainstAmericantargetsabroad.AmericanembassiesandmilitaryinstallationsoverseaswereonhighalertTuesday.

Nationalsecuritysourcessaidtheyareworkingunderthepremisethattheattackwillberenewed.Nocrediblegrouphasclaimedresponsibilityfortheattacks.ButauthoritiesbelievethatthecoordinationinvolvedandthewillingnessoftheattackerstodietokillotherspointtoaradicalIslamicgroup.

BushcutshortatriptoFloridatopromotepubliceducationandflewtoamilitaryairbaseinLouisianatoprotecthissecurity.TheCIA,sourcessaid,advisedhimtodeploynavybattlegroupsintheAtlantictoguardagainstrenewedattacks.HeconvenedameetingoftheNationalSecurityCouncil.Airportsnationwidewereclosed,forcingthegroundingofmorethan3600aircraft,andtheWhiteHouse,U.S.Capitol,StateandJusticedepartmentsandUnitedNationswereevacuated.

Acrossthenation,theimpactwasimmediate.InGlastonbury,Conn.,amemorialserviceatSt.Paul’sCatholicattractedmembersofmanyfaiths.AtArlingtonHospital,nearthePentagon,volunteerseagertodonatebloodshowedupjustasthefirstvictimswerebroughtin.InSiouxFalls,S.D.,U.S.MarshalLyleSwensonfoughtthroughnearpanicconditionstohelpcloseandevacuatethelocalairport.

“Thewaythesethingsaretimed,…youwonderwhat’scomingnext,”hesaid.

Congressionalleadersweremovedtoanunspecified“securelocation,”acongressionalsourcesaid.

America’sintelligencecommunityfacedcriticismforfailingtowardofftheattacks.

“(Thisis)abigintelligencefailure,”saidLawrenceEagleburger,asecretaryofstateunderthefirstPresidentGeorgeBush.

“Thisisanactofwar.ThisisthebiggestequivalenttoPearlHarborthatwe’vehadin60years.”

AuthoritiesbelieveoneofthejetsusedintheWorldTradeCenterattackswasanAmericanAirlines767hijackedafterleavingBoston.Thatjetstruckatowerofthe110-floorWorldTradeCenteratabout8:

45a.m.nearthetopandcausingalargeexplosionandfire.Thetowerstruckfirstwastheonetoppedbyalargeantennaandbeacon.

Lessthan20minuteslater,atabout9:

04a.m.,theWorldTradeCenter’ssecondtowerwashitbyanotherhijackedairlinerinsimilarfashion.Thattowerpartiallycollapsed,fromtheforceofthecrash.Theothertowerfelllaterinthemorning.

Atabout9:

40,athirdjetwascrashingintoawestwallofthePentagonintheWashingtonsuburbofArlington,Va.Thataircraft,alsoacommercialjet,wasclearlyvisibletorushhourcommutersasitswoopedinlowoverInterstatehighwayI-95.

Inall,two757sand767swereused,federalauthoritiesandairlinesofficialssaid.

Terrorismexpertssaidthatthedateoftheattack-September11-holdnospecialsignificanceintheMuslimreligionorintheannalsofArabterrorgroups.

ButtheydidnotethatanassociateofOsamabinLadenwasscheduledtobesentencedtoday(Sept12)forhisroleinthe1998bombingoftheAmericanembassyinTanzaniathatkilled213.ThefederalcourthouseinNewYorkCityislocatedneartheWorldTradeCentersiteinlowerManhattan.

Investigatorsalsodeclinedtosayhowtheybelievetheattackswerecarriedout.Oneworkingtheory:

Theterroristsweretrainedpilotswhooverwhelmedcabincrewsthenflewthejetsthemselves.
