\”ShesaidthatshewoulddancewithmeifIbroughtherredroses,\”criedtheyoungStudent,\”butinallmygardenthereisnoredrose.\”

Fromhernestintheoaktree(栎树)theNightingaleheardhim,andshelookedoutthroughtheleavesandwondered.

\”Noredroseinallmygarden!

\”hecried,andhisbeautifuleyesfilledwithtears.\”Ah,onwhatlittlethingsdoeshappinedepend!

Ihavereadallthatthewisemenhavewritten,andallthesecretsofphilosophyaremine,yetforwantofaredroseismylifemadewretched.\”(不幸的、悲惨的)

\”Hereatlastisatruelover,\”saidtheNightingale.\”NightafternighthaveIsungofhim,thoughIknewhimnot:

nightafternighthaveItoldhisstorytothestarsandnowIseehairisdarkasthehyacinth(风信子)--bloom,andhislipsareredastheroseofhisdesire;butpaionhasmadehisfacelikepaleivory,andsorrowhassethersealuponhisbrow.\”

ButtheNightingaleunderstoodthesecretoftheStudent’ssorrow,andshesatsilentintheoak-tree,andthoughtaboutthemysteryofLove.

Suddenlyshespreadherbrownwingsforflight,andsoaredintothepaedthroughthegrovelikeashadowandlikeashadowshesailedacrothegarden.

Inthecenterofthegra-plotwasstandingabeautifulRose-tree,andwhenshesawitsheflewovertoit,andlituponaspray.

\”Givemearedrose,\”shecried,\”andIwillsingyoumysweetestsong.\”

ButtheTreeshookitshead.

\”Myrosesareyellow,\”itanswered;\”asyellowasthehairofthemermaiden(美人鱼)whositsuponanamberthrone,andyellowerthanthedaffodilthatbloomsinthemeadow(割草机)beforethemowereswithhisgotomybrotherwhogrowsbeneaththeStudent’swindow,andperhapshewillgiveyouwhatyouwant.\”

SotheNightingaleflewovertotheRose-treethatwasgrowingbeneaththeStudent’swindow.

\”Givemearedrose,\”shecried,\”andIwillsingyoumysweetestsong.\”

ButtheTreeshookitshead.

\”Myrosesarered,\”itanswered,\”asredasthefeetofthedove,andredderthanthegreatfansofcoralthatwaveandwaveintheocean-thewinterhaschilledmyveins,andthefrosthasnippedmybuds,andthestormhasbrokenmybranches,andIshallhavenorosesatallthisyear.\”

\”OneredroseisallIwant,\”criedtheNightingale,\”onlyoneredrose!

IstherenowaybywhichIcangetit?

\”Thereisaway,\”answeredtheTree;\”butitissoterriblethatIdarenottellittoyou.\”

\”Tellittome,\”saidtheNightingale,\”Iamnotafraid.\”

\”Ifyouwantaredrose,\”saidtheTree,\”youmustbuilditoutofmusicbymoonlight,andstain(染色)itwithyourownheart’smustsingtomewithyourbreastagainstanightlongyoumustsingtome,andthethornmustpierce(刺穿)yourheart,andyourlife-bloodmustflowintomyveins(静脉),andbeemine.\”

TheStudentlookedupfromthegra,andlistened,buthecouldnotunderstandwhattheNightingalewassayingtohim,forheonlyknewthethingsthatarewrittendowninbooks.

ButtheOak-treeunderstood,andfeltsad,forhewasveryfondofthelittleNightingale,whohadbuilthernestinhisbranches.

SotheNightingalepreedcloseragainstthethorn,andlouderandloudergrewhersong,forshesangofthebirthofpaioninthesoulofamanandamaid.

Andadelicateflushofpinkcameintotheleavesoftherose,liketheflushinthefaceofthebridegroomwhenhekiesthelipsofthethethornhadnotyetreachedherheart,sotherose’sheartremainedwhite,foronlyaNightingale’sheart’sbloodcancrimsontheheartofarose.

AndtheTreecriedtotheNightingaletoprecloseragainstthethorn.\”Precloser,littleNightingale,\”criedtheTree,\”ortheDaywillebeforetheroseisfinished.\”

SotheNightingalepreedcloseragainstthethorn,andthethorntouchedherheart,andafiercepangofpainshotthrough,bitterwasthepain,andwilderandwildergrewhersong,forshesangoftheLovethatisperfectedbyDeath,oftheLovethatdiesnotinthetomb.

Andthemarvelousrosebecamecrimson,liketheroseoftheeasternwasthegirdleofpetals,andcrimsonasarubywastheheart.

ButtheNightingale’voicegrewfainter(虚弱的),andherlittlewingsbegantobeat,andafilmcameoverherandfaintergrewhersong,andshefeltsomethingchokingherinherthroat.

ThenshegaveonelastburstofwhiteMoonheardit,andsheforgotthedawn,andlingeredon(停留在…)intheredroseheardit,andittrembledalloverwithecstasy(狂喜),andopeneditspetalstothecoldmorningboreittoherpurplecaverninthehills,andwokethesleepingshepherdsfromtheirfloatedthroughthereedsoftheriver,andtheycarrieditsmeagetothesea.
