Theadvantageoftheadsisself-evident.Theyprovideuswithagoodcollectionofgoodsandservice,fromwhichwecanmakeourbestchoices.someoftheadsareillegal,spreadingfalseinformationandplanningtotreatpeoplewhoareeagertosolvetheirproblems.Tomanyadsdospoilourdailylifeandwasteourtime.TheyinterrupttheTVprograms,fillingourletterbox,andruinourappreciationofnatureinplaceofinterests.Peopleoftenfeelburdenedwiththeadsinsteadofsatisfyingwiththem.

Firstofall,petscanbegoodcompanions,whichisespeciallyimportantforthosewholivealoneandtheoldwhocannotgetoutmuch.  Whattheygetfromthepetsisnotonlyhoursofamusementbutalsoloyalty.  Somepetscanevenprotectthehousefromthieves.  Secondly,takingcareofapetalsohelpschildrentoberesponsibleandcaringmembersofthesociety.  Achildwholearnstobeverysensitivetothefeelingsofapetcanbeexpectedtohavepositiveattitudestootherpeopleandlife.

一.TheOriginoftheSong“HappyBirthdaytoYou”

Beganasasweetone,butlaterbecamebitter.Twosisters,MildredHill,ateacheratakindergarten,andDr.PattyHill,theprincipalofthesameschool,wroteasongtogetherforthechildren,entitled“GoodMorningtoAll”.WhenMildredcombinedhermusicaltalentswithhersister‟sknowledgeintheareaofkindergarteneducation,„GoodMorningtoAll”wassuretobeasuccess.Thesisterpublishedthesonginacollectionentitled“SongStoriesoftheKindergarten”in1893.Thirty-oneyearslater,afterDr.PattyHillbecametheheadoftheDepartmentofKindergartenEducationatColumbiaUniversity‟sTeachersCollege,agentlemanbythenameRobertColemanpublishedthesong,withoutthesisters‟permission.Headdedasecondpart,whichisthefamiliar“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Mr.Coleman‟sadditionofthesecondpartmadethesongpopularand,finally,thesisters”originalfirstpartdisappeared.“HappyBirthdaytoYou”hadaltogetherreplacedthesisters‟originalsong“GoodMorningtoAll”.In1916PattytooklegalactionagainstMr.Coleman.Incourt,shesucceededinprovingthatheyweretherealownersofthesong.

二.AGreatActor

Therewasonceagreatactorwhocouldnolongerrememberhislines.Afterseveralyearsofsearching,hefinallyfoundatheaterthatwaswillingtogivehimatry.Thedirectorsaid,“Thisisthemostimportantpart,andithasonlyoneline.Attheopeningyouwalkontostagecarryingarose.Youholdtherosetoyournosewithjustonefingerandthumb,smellitdeeplyandthensaythelineonpraiseoftherose:

„Ah,thesweetsmellofmylove.‟”Theactorwasexcited.Alldaylongbeforetheplayhepracticedhislineoverandoveragain.Finally,thetimecame.Thecurtainwentup,theactorwalkedontothestage,lookedattheaudience,andwithgreatemotionsaidtheline,“Ah,thesweetsmellofmylove.”Theaudienceexplodedinlaughter.Onlythedirectorwasfurious!

”Theactorwaspuzzled,“Whathappened?

AlfredHitchcockwasaBritishdirector.Hismoviesfrequentlyshowinnocentpeoplecaughtupinsituationsbeyondtheircontrolorevenunderstanding.Hitchcockpreferredtheuseofsuspenseinhismovies.Insurprise,thedirectorprovidestheviewerwithfrighteningthings.Insuspense,thedirectortellsorshowsthingstotheaudiencewhichthecharactersinthemoviedonotknow,andthenskillfullybuildsuptensionaroundwhatwillhappenwhenthecharactersfinallylearnthetruth.Hitchcockhadagreatsenseofhumor.OnceataFrenchairport,asuspiciouscustomsofficiallookedatHitchcock‟spassport,whichwasmarkedsimplyPRODUCER.Thecuriousofficialasked,“Andwhatdoyouproduce?

”“Gooseflesh.”repliedHitchcock.AlfredHitchcockalwaysmanagedtomakeabriefappearanceinhismovies:

Hewassometimesgettingonabus,orcrossingastreet,prwalkinginfrontofastore,oracrossthecourtyardinanapartment.However,forthemovieLifeboatin1944,hewasfacedwithadifficultproblem.Theentiremoviewassetinalifeboatoutatsea,andtherewereonlyafewcharactersintheboat.Originally,hewantedtofloatbyasadeadbody,buthewasafraidhe‟dsink!

Afirmadvertisingfora“friendly”employeehasbeenaskedtochangeitswordingbecauseitdiscriminatesagainstunfriendlypeople.Travelco,atravelagency,putinarequestfora“Friendlyemployee”toprovidefoodforitsstaff.ButtheJobCenterinBristoltoldmanagingdirectorHarrySmiththathewouldhavetoremovetheword“friendly”beforetheadvertisementcouldbeaccepted.Mr.Smithsaidhecouldnotbelievethedecisionandthoughtitwas“ridiculous.”Hesaid:

“Weweretoldwecouldnotusethatparticularwordbecauseitwasdiscriminatoryagainstpeoplewholookedunfriendly.Wethoughtitwasridiculous.It‟sonlytoonaturalforustospecifywhatkindofpeoplewewant.”Headded,“Thepeopleatthecenterhavesincesaidtheythoughttheyhadbeenalittleoverthetop.”Thecenterhadmadeitarulethatcertainwordswerenorallowedinadsandthewords“motivated”and“enthusiastic”hadbeenbannedinthepast.Anofficialofthecentersaid:

Ablackdogwalkedintoabutcher‟sshopwithafive-dollarbillinhismouth.Hespentseveralminuteslookingatthemeatondisplay.Hefinallyfixedhiseyesonthelambchopsandbarked,showingthathewantedtobuysomeofthem.Thebutcher,thinkingthedogwouldn‟tknowthedifference,pickedouttheworstchops.Thedogbarkedangrilyandcontinuedtobarkuntilthebutcherselectedthefinestchops.Afterthebutchertookthemoneyfromthedog‟smouth,thedogpickedupthechopsandlefttheshop.Thebutcherwasdeeplyimpressedanddecidedthathewouldliketoownacleverdoglikethat.Heclosedupshopandfollowedthedogtoseewhereitwent.Thedogenteredanap
