BackgroundInformation
AIDS
AIDSstandsforAcquiredImmuneDeficiencySyndrome.Itisdefinedasoccurringinpeoplewithantibodies(抗体)toaviruscalledHumanImmuno-deficiencyVirus(HIV),whichisthoughttohaveoriginatedinAfricanmonkeysandpassedtohumanpopulationsduringthetwentiethcentury.
HIVspreadsthroughwithinfectedblood,infectedsexualpartners,orwithinthewombofaninfectedpregnantmother.Afterinfectingaperson,HIVcanremainhiddeninthebodyforalongorashortperiodoftimeuntilitbecomesactiveanddevelopsintoAIDS,forwhichnoknowncureexists.
AIDSisaglobal,humanepidemic.TheWorldHealthOrganizationandUNAIDSestimatedthatbetween2.8and3.5millionpeoplewithAIDSdiedin2004.Anestimated22millionpeoplewithAIDShavediedsince1981.However,thesestatisticsareonlyestimates,asitisnotknownhowmanypeoplehaveactuallydiedofAIDS.
