What is an Oyster card?

Oyster is the easiest way to pay for journeys on the bus Tube, tram, Docklands light Railway （DLR）, London Overground and National Rail journeys in London. You can store your travel cards, Bus & Tram pass, season tickets and credit to pay for journeys as you go.

There are a number of ways for you to get an Oyster card:

How to use an Oyster card?

To pay the correct fare on the Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail services, you must always touch in on the yellow Oyster card reader at the start of your journey, and touch out at the end. If you don’t, a maximum cash Oyster fare will be charged when using the bus or tram. You must only touch in at the start, but not at the end of your journey.

What happens if I don’t visist London very often?

Don't worry. Any pay as you go credit on your card will not expire（过期）, so you can keep it for your next visit or lend it to a friend.

 People often say that the world is getting smaller. By this, they mean that with improved communications and trade, each country is becoming more and more familiar with one another. There seems to be a lot of truth to this. After all, you can buy African food in Norway, or watch a French movie in China.

But in spite of this, countries still have the power to shock people who visit them for the first time. For many of us, there are still real differences in the culture and habits between nations.

Recently, the Daily Mail reported on some culture shocks from around the world. A Serbian student, Milorad Boti, was highly surprised on a school trip to Germany when he found that public bathrooms were very different to those in his home country. He noticed that after using the toilet, the lid（盖子）rotated（旋转）as part of a cleaning process. Milorad was impressed. “That was the best thing that happened on that school trip,” he said.

Most often, however, it’s eating habits that are different between cultures. The Daily Mail article mentioned the shock of an Indian man, Kaushal Braot. When visiting a Western country, he notice people socializing in restaurants, often spending hours in them with friends. Kaushal was surprised because in India, restaurants are for one thing only:

 eating.

The cultural differences people noticew can seem positive, negative, or simply jst strange. But rather than something to be feared, these differences should be welcomed. Indeed, if the whole world were like one big country, it would be a much duller place. So let’s be proud of our own culture, and at the same time, open to the cultures of others.

When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it’s likely that students with those beliefs will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport. So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical（批判的）thinking and cooperation. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has their own responsibility.

Besides coursework, another important problem faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents’ cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when face with the challenges of getting used to an unfamiliar environment.

What I strongly recommend is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships, although they can’t replace the family and friends you miss from home. Sign up for campus societies, and try to enjoy life on campus, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for every evening, as well as three things you’re looking forward to every morning.

Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many obstacles daily. But hopefully, students who are studying abroad, or who are planning to, will overcome their difficulties and make their time overseas a success.

 Outstanding in the Field, an organization that holds dinners on farms and other currently popular locations（地方）, is traveling across the U.S., Canada, France and Bermuda for its annual tour.

Dinners on the farm have become popular in the last several years as the local food movement has grown. A dinner of local foods cooked by local chefs and eaten as close to the source as possible is an enjoyable way to spend an evening. Outstanding in the Field seems to have been ahead of fashion. They’ve been holding these dinners since 1999. In that time, they’ve visited all 50 states and more than 15 countries.

The goal of Outstanding in the Field is “to get people out to the places where the food comes from and honor the people whose good work brings health,” says founder Jim Denevan. “Our moving restaurant without walls may be located wherever good food comes from. There are no limits.

Their main location is a field on a farm, but they also hold events on mountaintops, sea caves, and other places in keeping with their vision.

Their 2018 Tour began on May 5 in California and runs through Nov. 11. Tickets to these dinners on the farm are expensive. Ticket prices ranged from $180 to $300 per person. The price includes a reception with wine and passed appetizers（开胃菜）, four courses with wine, all tips, producer discussions and a tour of the farm. The events are intended for adults, and they don’t recommend that children attend.

It’s more than just a meal. The food isn’t the only reason to check out this dining trend. It’s a way to connect in a natural setting with like-minded, food-loving people while also supporting local farmers.
