1992MyViewonReadingExtensively

泛读好还是精读好(Toreadextensivelyortoreadintensively)

   Bathedinsomanyworthybooks,everyoneisfacedwiththeoptionofreadingmethod.Somethinkthatweshouldreadextensively.Itistheirconvictionthat,readingextensivelycouldeasilyenlargeknowledge,wideninterestsandenrichlives.Ontheotherhand,withthesharpincreaseininformationtoday,wearenotallowedtoreadwordbyword.Itseemsanimpossiblemissiontoaccomplishdigestingcarefullyeverymaterial.Therefore,whatweneednowadaysistoreadextensively.

   However,somepeople,onthecontrary,holdtheoppositepointofview.Intheireyes,webenefitmuchmorefromreadingintensively.Onlybyfollowingeverywordareweabletocomprehendthehiddenmeanings.Besides,withoutintensivereading,wearelikelytomissagoodmanywonderfulexpressions,thoughtfulwordsandeventruths.Thus,theysuggestchewingabookmouthbymouthratherthansimplyswallowingitatatime.

   AsfarasIamconcerned,weoughttolearntoreadextensivelyaswellasintensively.Itisnotoftenpossible,toreadinmerelyoneway.Insteadoftryingtoreadeverylineandwordinnewspapersandmagazine,we'dbettersummarizethemainidea.Andwhenitcomestoliterature,art,sciencearticlesandotherslikethese;itiswisetoreadthemintensively.

有选择地读还是广泛地读?

Howshouldweread?

Shouldwereadselectivelyorextensively?

Everyonehashisownview.

Somepeoplethinkweshouldreadselectively.Theyarguethatwiththedevelopmentofmodernscienceandtechnology,moreandmorebooksarepublished.Itisimpossibleforustoreadallthebooks.What’smore,therearemanybadbooksthatarepoisonoustoourmind,andweshouldn’treadthem.Sincewecan’treadallthebooksandweshouldn’treadbadbooks,wemustreadselectively.

TV—BlessingorCurse?

Fewthingsinthemodernworldhavesomuchinfluenceonpeopleasthetelevisiondoes.Beingbesieged包围withTVnews,absorbingteleplays,well-mastermindedprogrammes,onecaneasilyconcludethatTVisarealblessingtothehumansociety,offeringaffluententertainmentandinformation.Yet,convenientandhelpfulasitis,thetelevisionalsobringsnegativeeffects.

Tobeginwith,TVmakespeoplemorepassivethanbefore:

1996Everycollegestudentwouldagreethatlifeincollegeisnotthesameasitwasinthemiddleschool. Now,youhavebeenaskedbytheStudent’sUniontowriteapassageentitled:

TheMainDifferenceBetweenMyCollegeLifeAndMyMiddleSchoolLife

Whenstudyinginmiddleschool,shelteredunderthewingsofparentsandteachers,andfollowingwhattheyrequired,IalwayswishedIwereafreeeagleflyinginthesky.AfterIenteredcollege,Iwasoverjoyedtofindoutthemaindifferencebetweencollegelifeandmiddleschoollife,becausethat’swhatIlike–tobeamasterofmyownlife.

Actually,Ireallyenjoymycollegelife,forIamarealeagleinthesky.Istudyautomatically,notforcedbymyparentsandteachers;Istudytoacquireknowledge,notonlyforexams;Iarrangemytimetoamusemyself,nottobecriticized.Allinall,Iliveformyself,onmyown.

Ofcourse,althoughcollegeoffersmeasky,butitdoesn’tmeanIcanspoilmyself.Asamasterofmyownlifenow,I’dbeagoodone,tostudyhardandtolivehealthily.

1997Someofyourclassmatesthinkthatmorepressurefromacademicstudiesisnotbeneficialtostudents. Youeitheragreeordisagreewiththem:

Itisknownthatinterestisthemotherofsuccess.Butweneversaypressureisthemotherofsuccess.Infact,excessivepressureisthemotherofresistance.Wegrown-upuniversitystudentsdonotneedmorepressurefromacademicstudiesbecauseitwilldoharmtousmentallyandphysically.

Inconclusion,givingmorepressuretostudentsinacademicstudiesisanincorrectwaytoencouragethemtostudywell.Teachersshouldgiveitupquicklyandfindanotherwaytoarousestudents’interestinstudy.

NowadayswecanseeadvertisementsonTelevisioneveryday.Somepeoplebelievethatadvertisingontelevisioncanbringusbenefits,butothersdon’tthinkso.Inmyopinion,Iaminfavoroftheadvertisingontelevision.

Therearetworeasons,Ithink,forthegrowingnumberofadvertisementonTV.First,inacompetitiveeconomy,theconsumerusuallyhasthechoiceofseveraldifferentbrandsofthesameproduct.Thus,manufacturersareconfrontedwithaproblem—Howtokeepsaleshighenoughtostayinbusiness.Theysolvethisproblembyadvertising.Throughadvertising,eachmanufacturingcompanytriestoconvinceconsumersthatitsproductisspecial.Second,mostconsumersareinterestedinadvertisement.TheywishtogetfromTVadvertisementthefirsthandinformationaboutnewproducts,whichenablesthemtochoosetheonetheylikebest.Asaresult,thereisasharpincreaseinadvertisementontheTVscreen.

Inconclusion,TVadvertisingplaysaveryimportantroleinoureconomicbehavior.WithabundantinformationavailableonTV,wecanmakesensiblechoicesasconsumers.

Advertisementshasbecomeaninseparablepartoftelevisionprogram;whilekeepingtheaudienceupwiththelatestinformationaboutproductsofvariouskinds,itcouldalsointriguetheconsumersintobuyingthingstheydon’treallyneed.SomethinkTVadvertisingbringsthembenefits,othersholdadifferentview.Asforme,Iagreewiththelater,becauseamajor,ifnotoverwhelming,disadvantageofTVadvertisementisthatitmakesthepriceoftheproductmuchhigherthanitoughttobe.

Admittedly,televisionprovidesameansforreachingagreatnumberofpotentialconsumers,butthecostisalsohuge.Forexample,anadvertisementairedbeforeahitTVseriescouldpossibleburnamillionina30seconds.Butwhoisgoingtopayforthis?

Isthemanufacturergoingtopayforit?

Surelynot.Theyaimatprofits,sotheonlythingtheywoulddoistoaddtheexpenditureofthecommercialintotheoriginalcostoftheirproducts,whichwillinevitableresultinahighermarketprice.

Forinstance,I’vebeenusingakindofairconditionerforyears;ithasgoodqualityandreasonableprice.However,afteritsadvertisementwasputonTV,thepriceroseby20%,whichmadeitlessappealingthanbefore,whilepeoplethinktheyenjoyfreeTVshoppingguide,theyactuallypayforit,notthroughthecablebill,butthereceiptoftheirpurchase.
