Ms.Sontag'sworkmadearadicalbreakwithtraditionalpostwarcriticisminAmerica.Sheadvocatedanaestheticapproachtothestudyofculture,championingstyleovercontent.

Ms.SontagwasbornSusanRosenblattinManhattanonJan.16,1933,thedaughterofJackandMildredRosenblatt.HerfatherwasafurtraderinChina,andhermotherjoinedhimthereforlongperiods,leavingSusanandheryoungersisterinthecareofrelatives.WhenSusanwas5,herfatherdiedinChinaoftuberculosis.HermothermovedthefamilytoTucson[tu:
