  Anddefenselawyersincreasinglysearchsocialnetworkingsitesforevidencethatcouldchallengethevalidityofapoliceofficer'stestimony.InonecaseinNewYork,ajurydismissedaweaponschargeagainstadefendantafterleamingthatthearrestingofficerhadlistedhismoodonMySpaceas"devious"andwroteonFacebookthathewaswatchingthefilmTrainingDaylo"brushuponproperpoliceprocedure".

  Theproblemisseriousenoughthatdepartmentsacrossthecountryarescramblingtodeveloprulestogovemwhatofficerscanandcannotdoonline.

  "Thisissomethingthatallthepolicechiefsaroundthecountry,ifyou'renotdealingwithit,you'dbetterdealwithit,"saidMarkA.Marshall,chiefofpoliceinSmithfield,Va.,andthepresidentoftheInternationalAssociationofChiefsofPolice,whichhasdevelopeditsownmodelpolicy.
