Bluetoothusesashort-rangeradiolinkbuiltintoa9mmx9mmmicrochip.Theprotocolenablestheexchangeofinformationbetweenmanydevices,includingmobiletelephones,PDAs,notebookPCs,handheldPCs,associatedperipherals,andhomehubs,whichmayincludeHomeRF.Theradiowilloperateonthegloballyavailable2.45GHzISM"freeband,"meaningtherewillbenohindranceforinternationaltravelersusingBluetooth-enabledequipment.Bluetoothdoesnotrequirelineofsightforconnection,providedtheyarewithinoperationalrangeofotherBluetooth-enableddevices.TheBluetoothbasebandprotocolisacombinationofcircuit-andpacket-switching,makingitsuitableforbothvoiceanddata.Eachvoicechannelsupportsa64Kbit/ssynchronouslink,andtheasynchronouschannelcansupportanasymmetriclinkofupto721Kbit/sineitherdirection,whilepermitting57.6Kbit/sinthereturndirection.Allinall,thisisfastenoughtocopewiththevastmajorityofproposeddataratesovercellularsystems.Thenominallinkrangeis10cmto10m,butlinkscanbeextendedtomorethan100mbyincreasingthetransmitpower.ThesoftwareframeworkintheproposedspecificationwouldrequireBluetooth-compliantdevicestosupportabasiclevelofinteroperability.Thelevelofcompliancewillvarydependingonthedeviceapplication.
