ThefirstpersontoreachtheSouthPolewasRoaldAmundsen,aNorwegianexplorer.AmundsenwasborninBorge,nearOslo,Norway.HeattendedtheUniversityofChristianiaandthenjoinedtheNorwegiannavy.

Amundesenmadeathree-yearexpeditionintheArctic(北极)beginningin1903.Hewasthefirsttonavigate(航行)NorthwestPassage,anorthernwaterroutefromtheAtlantic(大西洋)tothePacific(太平洋).ButAmundsen’sgreatestvoyagebeganin1910,attheendoftheearth.HeplanedtogototheNorthPole,butheheardthatRobertPearyhadalreadyreachedit.SoinsteadAmundsenheadedtotheSouthPoleinhisship.HelearnedthataBritishexpedition,ledbyRobertF.Scott,wasalsoonitswaythere.AmundsenreachedAntarctic(南极)inJanuary,1911.Heandhismenhadtowaitoutthebittercold,windywinterontheedgeoftheicebeforetheycouldheadfortheSouthPole.

InOctober,theysetout,with52well-traineddogstopulltheirsledges.OnthewaytothePole,theyclimbedglaciers(冰川),wentaroundhugecracks(裂口)intheice,andsurvivedfreezingblizzards(暴风雪).Finally,onDecember14,1911,AmundsenplacedtheNorwegianflagattheSouthPole.ScottandhismenfoundtheflagtherewhentheyreachedthePoleamonthlater.
