ThefirstpersontoreachtheSouthPolewasRoaldAmundsen,aNorwegianexplorer.AmundsenwasborninBorge,nearOslo,Norway.HeattendedtheUniversityofChristianiaandthenjoinedtheNorwegiannavy.

Amundesenmadeathree-yearexpeditionintheArctic（北极）beginningin1903.Hewasthefirsttonavigate（航行）NorthwestPassage,anorthernwaterroutefromtheAtlantic（大西洋）tothePacific（太平洋）.ButAmundsen’sgreatestvoyagebeganin1910,attheendoftheearth.HeplanedtogototheNorthPole,butheheardthatRobertPearyhadalreadyreachedit.SoinsteadAmundsenheadedtotheSouthPoleinhisship.HelearnedthataBritishexpedition,ledbyRobertF.Scott,wasalsoonitswaythere.AmundsenreachedAntarctic（南极）inJanuary,1911.Heandhismenhadtowaitoutthebittercold,windywinterontheedgeoftheicebeforetheycouldheadfortheSouthPole.
