Inthepast,westernerswerenotfamiliarwithTraditionalChineseMedicine(TCM),butnowitisbecominggloballypopular.Accordingtoagovernmentreport,TCMhasbeenintroducedinto183countriesandregionsaroundtheworld.

Infact,Chineseherbs(药草)playamoreimportantroleincuringdiseasesandkeepingthebodyingoodconditionintheTCMtreatmentsystemthanphysicaltreatment.Therefore,itisdisappointingtoknowthatalthough103worldHealthOrganizationmembercountrieshavegivenapprovaltothepracticeofacupuncture,notmanyrecognizeChineseherbalmedicine.TCMismuchlesspopularthanWesternmedicinepartlyduetotheslowdevelopmentofChineseherbs.

Herbscanbemadeintopills,powderandsoup.Thekindofherbsused,theirquality,quantityandtheprocessingtogetherdeterminetheeffectivenessoftheprescription(处方).ComparedwithWesternmedicine,whichhasstandardizeddrugproductionprocessesandtreatmentmethods,TCMlacksstandardization.Thechemicalcompositionandfunctionsofitsmedicinearestillunclearandtheireffectsareunstable.Fortunately,standardizationhasimprovedinrecentdecadesandanumberoffactoriesareincreasinglyproducingpatentedTCMdrugs.

AnotherreasonwhyTCMprescriptiondrugshavedevelopedslowlyisthatitlackscreativity.WhileWesternmedicine-makingcompaniescomeupwithnewproductseveryyear,TCMdrugproducerstendtomakemedicineaccordingtoprescriptionshandeddownfromthepast.ThatChinesechemistTuYoyowonthe2015NobelPrizeinPhysiologyorMedicineforherresearchintomalaria(痢疾)treatmentmaydrivecreativitytosomeextentinChina’sTCMindustry.
