AftertheCOVID-19pandemicbeganearlylastyear,Traversoandhiscolleaguesturnedtheirattentiontowardnewstrategiestoreduceinteractionsbetweenpotentiallysickpatientsandhealthcareworkers.Tothatend,theycreatedamobilerobotthatcouldinteractwithpatientsastheywaitedintheemergencydepartment.Therobotswereequippedwithsensorsthatallowthemtomeasurevitalsigns,includingskintemperature,breathingrate,andpulse(脉搏)rate.TherobotsalsocarriedaniPadforremotevideocommunicationwithahealthcareprovider.

Earthquakecandisruptwhales’huntingforfoodforuptoayear,accordingtoanewstudy.

OnNovember14,2016,theKaikouraearthquakestruckNewZealand’sSouthIsland,causingadestructivetsunami.Underthesurface,theearthquakecausedstrongcurrentsthatsweptawayandmostlykilledoffdiverseecosystemsofcreatureslivingalongtheKaikouraunderwatercanyon.

Asaresult,whaleshadtodivedeeperandlongertofindfood—“amajorshift”intheirbehavior,saysco-authorLizSlooten,amarinebiologistattheUniversityofOtagoinNewZealand.

Theimpactearthquakeshaveonlandanimalshasbeenwelldocumented,butscientistsknowlylittleaboutwhathappensunderwater.Suchresearchisimportantforgovernmentagencies,whichmayneedtotakerecentearthquakesintoconsiderationwhenconsideringfishingquotas(限额),notesRochelleConstantine,amarinemammalecologistattheUniversityofAuckland.

Thecanyon’supperreachesarerichincreatures,supplyingfoodforthefishthatmakeupthewhales’diet.Sowhenthesesmallerlifeformswerewashedaway,ithad“severeconsequencesforthecommunityaroundthere”,saysstudyco-authorWillRayment.“Thateffectflowedallthewaythroughthefoodchain.”

Aspartoftheirongoingstudy,thescientistsweretracking42individualwhales.Aftertheearthquake,inall,theteammanagedtorecorddataon40whales,showingthattheabundanceofwhalesinthegeneralareadidn’tchangeaftertheearthquake.However,thewhaleschangedhowtheyusedtheirhabitat.

Ayearaftertheearthquake,theresearchersobservedthewhalesreturningtotheirprevioussurface-breathingintervals.Thiscouldhavebeenbecausethecommunitiesofanimalsthatmakeupthewhales’foodbegantorecover.“Itgivesyouanideaofhowresilient(有复原力的)thesedeep-seacommunitiesare,”saysRayment.
