AsetofregulationsonhouseholdgarbagesortinghastakeneffectinShanghaiMonday.Manycitizensarestillconfusedabouttheclassificationofthefourdifferenttypesoftrash.Thankfully,authoritieshavereleasedanofficialguidelinetoclarifythenewrules.

recyclablewaste,hazardous(有害的)waste,householdfoodwasteandresidual(剩余的)waste.Hazardouswaste,asthenamesuggests,includesmixedpoisonousmaterialslikeusedbatteries,lightbulbs,out-of-datemedicines,paintandpesticides.Householdfoodwaste,whichistranslatedto“wettrash”inChinese,referstofoodleftovers,rottenfood,petfood,fruitpeels,remainsofTCMherbsandflowers.Paper,plastic,glass,metalandtextiles(纺织品)arecountedasrecyclablewaste.Thedefinitionofresidualwasteisalittleconfusing.Anythingthatisnotlistedabovebelongsinthiscategory.

Asspecificasthenewguidelineis,residentsstillhaveahardtimesortingtrashcorrectlyandarefindingitchallengingtomemorizethemall.Forinstance,bothplasticbottlesandbubbleteaorcoffeecupsareplasticmaterials.However,theformerfallstothecategoryofrecyclablewasteandthelatterbelongstoresidualwaste.Todistinguish,somenetizenshavecomeupwiththeirownwaystosorttrash.
