Ididn’tunderstandtheextentofherdepression.AlthoughLaurahadmadepreviousattemptstoendherlife.Iwasstillshockedbyherultimatesuccess.Ishouldhaverealizedhowdesperateshewasbecause,inherusualprotectiveway,shetriedtoprepareme.IreceivedalettershortlybeforeshediedinwhichLaurahadwritten,“Thepanicanddesperationareoverwhelming.”Ididnotheedhercry.

WhenwefirstlearnedofLaura’sintentions,myfamilyreceivednoassistanceintryingtodeterminewhethershewasdeadoralive.MysisterCarolreceivedaletterfromLaurawhichbegan,“Pleaseforgiveme.Ijustcan’tstandtoliveanymore.”WeimmediatelycalledthehospitalandlearnedthatLaurahadalreadybeenmissingfortwenty-sixhours.Butdespiteourplea,nooneattheVeteransAdministrationHospitalorthepolicedepartmentwouldagreetosearchforher.TheThompsonoftheVAHospitalstatedthatLaurawasnolongertheirresponsibilitysinceshehadvoluntarilyleftthehospitalgrounds.DonnaEdwardsofthepolicedepartment’sMissingBureauindifferentlyremarkedthatheycoulddonothingbecauseLaurawas“governmentproperty.”Afterdrivingtothehospital,afour-hourdrivefromourhome,webeganasystematicandnever-rackingverbalinvestigationofLaura’sfriends,cabcompanies,andhotels.WefoundLaura,butourworstfearswereconfirmed.Weweretoolate.

Whatreallymakesmeangryisthatnoonetriedtostopher.AccordingtoKathy,afriendofLaura’swhowasalsoapatientattheVAcenter,somethingparticularlyupsettinghappenedtoLaurathatday.Afterbeingassuredbyherdoctor’ssecretarythatthedoctorwouldseeher,Laurawenttohisoffice.Herpsychiatristrudelytoldhershewouldhavetomakeanappointmentforthefollowingweek.WhenLauraprotested,heyelled,“Getthehellout,orIwillcalltheguards!
