TheCivilWarwasfilledwithheroesonbothsidesofthebattlefield.NameslikeGeneralSherman,andtheacclaimedSouthernGeneralRobertE.Lee.Allofthesemenfoughtbravelyandmadeharrowingdecisionsontheirownaccord.ButLincolnisprobablymostoftenassociatedwithhisleadershipofthecountryduringthisdifficultperiod.Hewasafirmbelieverthatslaverywaswrongandhefoughthardtostopit.In1863,LincolnsignedtheEmancipationProclamationwhichlegallygrantedfreedomtoallslaveslivinginAmerica.Butin1865,Lincoln’slifecametoanabruptendedwhilehewaswatchingaplayatFord’sTheaterinWashingtonD.C.Hisdeathwasnotanaccident;

hewasassassinatedbyamannamedJohnWilkesBooth.

NotlongafterLincoln’sdeath,theNorthdefeatedtheSouthandtheCivilWarwasended.TheSouthwasnolongerthoughtofasanothercountry,butpartofAmerica.AndalloftheslaveslivingandworkingintheSouthwerefreedandabsorbedintosociety.

2.Mike—aStoryofPersonalChange

Mikecouldhardlybedescribedasyourtypicaladolescent.HewouldcasuallyacknowledgetohisfewfriendsthathelikedtowatchDVDs,althoughperhapsamoreaccuratedescriptionwasthathewasaDVDaddict.Overthelastsixmonths,MikehadaccumulatedthousandsofDVDs.Whenhewasnotatschool,hehadbecomeaccustomedtospendinghistimewanderingthestreetsofthecity,acquiringmoreandmorefilms.Indeed,itbecameajokethatifaskedforhisaddress,hewouldgivetheaddressoftheDVDshopadjacenttoourschoolsincehespentsomuchtimethere.

ThechangeinMike’sbehavioroverthenextmonthwasdramatic.IhavenodoubtthatitwastheFilmClubwhichactivatedtheturnaround.Onceaboywhospentmostofhistimesulking,Mikewasnowamodelstudent.Beforeeachfilmwasshown,hewouldgiveaveryinformativespeechaboutthedirectorandmainactors.Everyonewasimpressedbyhisknowledgeandpassionforfilmsandhesuddenlybecameextremelypopularatschool.

3.Salt

NowthatBilly’sparentswerealittlemoreaffluent,thefamilyhadagreedthattheycouldacottageontheoutskirtsoftown.Althoughthecottagewassomewhatold-fashioned,theagentwhorentedtheplacetothemwaskeentoadvocatethattheyshouldnotinstallair-conditioningastheycouldair-conditiontheplacebyopeningtheskylights.Thedaythattheymoved,theairwasheavywiththeadventofspring,asenseofrenewalaccompaniedthemalongtheway;

BillyandtheolddogRufuswatchedtheamazingaerialgymnasticsoftheswallowsoutofthecarwindow,browsingthroughthefamilyalbumeverynowandthen.Whentheyarrived,agroupofmenwereunloadingthevan.Billythoughtlookingaroundthenewsurroundingsshouldbeplacedhighontheiragenda,sohewhistledtoRufusandtheysetoffonanadventure.Theyfoundasmallfootpath,RufusshowinghisexcitementandhisaffectionforBillybypantingandwagginghistail.Billywasatanagewhenhecouldstillfeelasenseofaestheticexcitementatthebeautyofnature.Theadverseeffectsofthoseyearsinthecityseemedtovanishashewalked,andwithRufusashisaffiliatehefeltinvincible.However,hehadreckonedwithoutRufus.Theyroundedabendinthepathandsuddenly,inthenextfield,theysawsheep.Rufusknewagoodgamewhenhesawone,heranstraightintothefield,bakingaggressively.Justthen,amaningreenbootssteppedoutandinanequallyaggressivemannerstartedtoshoutatRufustogetoutofthefield.Withasenseofalarm,BillyrealizedthatthemanwascarryingashotgunandhesawhimlevelitandtakeaimatRufus.

“Pleasedon’tshoot”,yelledBilly,butthisseemedtoaggravatethemanstillmore.ThegunwentoffandRufushowledinagony.Heranhelter-skelterbacktoBillywithhistailbetweenhislegs.ThemanstrodeovertoBilly.

“Thosesheeparepregnant”,themansaid,angrily.“Ifyouagitatethemtheycanlosetheirlambs.Iwillaffirmmyrighttokillanydogthatchasesthem.”

“Iagree”,saidBilly.“AndI’msorry,please;

4.FreshmanYear

Iwasborninasmalltown,upinthemountains.Becauseofthehighaltitude,fewpeoplelivedthere.Iwasalwaysamidmyneighborsandfriends,peopleIhadknownforallofmylife.WhenIwasinmyhometown,Ifeltlikethosedayswouldlastforever.Butthedayswentbyquickly,andsoonIfoundmyselfpackingmybagsforcollege.Iwasfullofambition,andhadappliedtogotouniversityinabigcity.

WhenIfirstgottomyuniversity,Iwasonthealertforeverything.Ifeltverymuchalonewithoutmyfamilyandfriends.Iwaslikeanalienarrivingonanewplanet.Ifeltlikeanambassadorfromanotherworld.Onceclassesstarted,thingswerebetter.Iwasbusier,becauseIhadtoallocatemostofmytimetostudying.Iwantedtoworkhard,anddidnotallowmyselftogotoalargeamountofparties.Iwantedtofindanalternatesociallifethatwouldletmehavefun,withoutalwaysdrinkingalcohol,likesomeuniversitystudentsdo.Manypeopleallegethatthisiswhysomestudentsgetbadgradestheirfirstyearatuniversity.

BecauseIfeltveryambiguousaboutwhatIwantedtostudy,Itookmanydifferentclasses.Itriedmanydifferentthings,butstillhadn’tfoundtheperfectmatchforme.Thismademefeelevenmorelostatschool,andIknewIhadtofindawaytoamendthings.Inordertomakenewfriends,andalleviatemyloneliness,Ijoinedthedramaclubatmyschool.ItwasthereImetmyfirstally.Thepresidentofthedramaclubwasanolderstudent,namedBetty.Shewasquiteamiable,andhelpedgivemeadviceaboutschool.ShehelpedmetoaltermyschedulesothatIhadthebestclasses.

Jerryhadbeeninterestedinancienthistorysincehewasalittlechild.Everynightbeforegoingtobed,hisgrandfatherwouldtellhimstoriesofgreatcivilizationsliketheRomans,theVikings,theIncasandmanyothers.Theseshortanecdotesandstoriesalwaysinvolvedgreatkingsandleaders,greatwarsandbattles,andgreatheroesandfoes.However,astorythathadanythingtodowiththefierceVikingswasalwaysJerry’sfavorite.Hewasmostinterestedinthesestoriesbecausehisgrandfatherhadanalyzedtheirfamilytreeanddiscoveredthatthefamily’sancestorswereactuallyVikings.
