Passage1BorntoWin

Eachhumanbeingisbornassomethingnew,somethingthathasneverexistedbefore.Eachisbornwiththecapacitytowinatlife.Eachhasauniquewayofseeing,hearing,touching,tastingandthinking.Eachhashisorherownuniquepotentials—capabilitiesandlimitations.Eachcanbeasignificant,thinking,aware,andcreativebeing—aproductiveperson,awinner.

Thewords“winner”and“loser”havemanymeanings.Whenwerefertoapersonasawinner,wedonotmeanonewhomakessomeoneelselose.Tous,awinnerisonewhorespondsauthenticallybybeingcredible,trustworthy,responsive,andgenuine,bothasanindividualandasamemberofsociety.

Winnersdonotdedicatetheirlivestoaconceptofwhattheyimaginetheyshouldbe;rather,theyarethemselvesandassuchdonotusetheirenergyputtingonaperformance,maintainingpretenceandmanipulatingothers.Theyareawarethatthereisadifferencebetweenbeinglovingandactingloving,betweenbeingstupidandactingstupid,betweenbeingknowledgeableandactingknowledgeable.Winnersdonotneedtohidebehindamask.

Winnersarenotafraidtodotheirownthinkingortousetheirownknowledge.Theycanseparatefactsfromopinionsandtheydon’tpretendtohavealltheanswers.Theylistentoothers,evaluatewhattheysay,butcometotheirownconclusions.Althoughwinnerscanadmireandrespectotherpeople,theyarenottotallydefined,demolished,bound,orawedbythem.

 Winnersdonotplay“helpless”,nordotheyplaytheblaminggame.Instead,theyassumeresponsibilityfortheirownlives.Theydon’tgiveothersafalseauthorityoverthem.Winnersaretheirownbossesandtheyknowit.

Awinner’stimingisright.Winnersrespondappropriatelytothesituation.Theirresponsesarerelatedtothemessagesentandtheypreservethesignificance,worth,well-being,anddignityofthepeopleinvolved.Winnersknowthatforeverythingthereisaseasonandforeveryactivityatime.

Althoughwinnerscanfreelyenjoythemselves,theycanalsopostponeenjoyment,andcandisciplinethemselvesinthepresenttoenhancetheirenjoymentinthefuture.Winnersarenotafraidtogoafterwhattheywant,buttheydosoinproperways.Winnersdonotgettheirsecuritybycontrollingothers.Theydonotsetthemselvesuptolose.

Awinnercaresabouttheworldanditspeople.Heorsheisnotisolatedfromthegeneralproblemsofsociety,butisconcerned,compassionate,andcommittedtoimprovingthequalityoflife.Eveninthefaceofnationalandinternationaladversity,awinner’sself-imageisnotoneofapowerlessindividual.Awinnerworkstomaketheworldabetterplace.

Passage2Family’sWinnerBecomesaLoserandLoseraWinner

Thenameofthegameisnotalwayswhatitseemstobe.RobertLanehadtwosons:

onewasnamedLoser,theotherWinner.Onebecameapolicemanandwaseventuallypromotedtodetective.Theotherfellintothelifeofasmall-timecrook,rackingupatleast31arrestsbeforebeingjailedfortwoyears.

ButforthebrothersLane,itwasnotacaseoftheiruniquenamessealingtheirfates.“Iwentatotallyseparaterouterightfromthestart,”saidLoserLane,41,adetectiveintheSouthBronx.Loser,astarstudentandathlete,wentonscholarshiptoaneliteprepschool,ontoLafayetteCollegeinPennsylvania,andthenjoinedtheforce.

Winner’slifehasgonetheotherway.Now44,Winnerlastmonthcompletedatwo-yearjailsentenceforbreakingintoacar.HeislivinginahomelessshelterinupstateNewYork,shuttlingbackandforthbetweenitandthecitytryingtogethislifeontrack.Whydidhecommitsomanycrimes?

“It’sjustsomesituationsIgotin,”Winnersaid.

Losersaidofhisbrother:

“Mostofthecrimesareminorcrimes.He’sjustkooky,notaheavydrinker,somedomesticviolenceproblems,butwasneveraheavydrinker,neverintodrugs…He’sjustnotallthere,Ithink.”

Thebrothersrarelyseeeachother.ThoughWinnerwillphoneLoserwhenheisshortofmoney,theyarenolongerclose.“I’macop,”saidLoser,whoisknownasLouonthejob.“AndIhaveawaywithme,Idon’ttoleratealot.”

TheLaneboysraninthesamecircleswhilegrowingupinpublichousinginHarlem,wheretheirnamesneverseemedtoarousecuriosityorridiculefromtheneighborhoodkids.“Whenyou’reyoung,youdon’tknowthatit’sabadname,andbythetimeyouhitgradeschool,everybodyknowsyou.Itwasaregularthing,”LoserLanesaid.IthelpedthatLoserwastheyoungestofeightbrothersandsistersandthathewasanaturalathlete,admiredbytheotherkidsforhison-fieldachievements.

ThestoryofhowLosergothisnameissimple.Thedayhewasborn,theirlatefather,Robert,askedhisdaughterwhattonamethebaby.“Mydadcomeshomeandasksmyoldestsisterwhattonamemeandshesaid,'Well,we’vegotaWinner,whydon’twehaveaLoser?

'Andthereyougo.”WhileLoser’sfriendshadnoproblemcallinghimbyhisname,histeachersandotheradults“couldn’tbringthemselvestocallmeLoser”,sohebecameLou.

true,anditstillquitehasn'tsunkeninyet.

YoualwaysgottobeMissAmerica,yoursisternevergottobe?

Jennifer:

Ohyes,she'snevergonnalivethatdown,sheislike,sheislikeagreatoldersister.

Kate:

Especiallynotnow,andtellusalittlebitaboutyourplatform,Iknowthatyouhavea

plantoreallytrytohelpwithdrunk-driving.

Jennifer:

Correct,myplatformisbuildingintolerancetodrunk-drivingandunderagedrinking,

andI'veworkedfor5years,inthestateofOklahoma,todiminishalcohol-related

fatalitiesanddiminishunderagedrinking,sonowI'llbeabletotakethatbeyondthe

bordersofOklahomaonanationallevel,ur,becausepeoplearestilldyingeverysingle

dayfromalcoholrelatedfatalities,andit'sjustnotnecessary,andweneedmore

educationregardingthat.
