TheScientificMethod
‘Hypotheses,’saidMedawarin1964,‘areimaginativeandinspirationalincharacter’;
theyare‘adventuresofthemind’.HewasarguinginfavorofthepositiontakenbyKarlPopperintheLogicofScientificDiscovery(1972,3rdedition)thatthenatureofscientificmethodishypothetico-deductiveandnot,asisgenerallybelieved,inductive.
Itisessentialthatyou,asanintendingresearcher,understandthedifferencebetweenthesetwo
interpretationsoftheresearchprocesssothatyoudonotbecomediscouragedorbegintosufferfromafeelingof‘cheating’ornotgoingaboutittherightway.
