Theycanelevatemenfromobscuritytonationalprominencewithinaweek。

Theycanrewardsomepoliticianswithnationalexposureandignoreothers。

  FormillionsofAmericansthenetworkreporterwhocoversacontinuingissue--liketheABMorcivilrights--becomes,ineffect,thepresidingjudgeinanationaltrialbyjury。

  Itmustberecognizedthatthenetworkshavemadeimportantcontributionstothenationalknowledge--throughnews,documentaries,andspecials。

Theyhaveoftenusedtheirpowerconstructivelyandcreativelytoawakenthepublicconsciencetocriticalproblems。

Thenetworksmadehungerandblacklungdiseasenationalissuesovernight。

TheTVnetworkshavedonewhatnoothermediumcouldhavedoneintermsofdramatizingthehorrorsofwar。

Thenetworkshavetackledourmostdifficultsocialproblemswithadirectnessandanimmediacythat’sthegiftoftheirmedium。

WedoknowthattoamanthesecommentatorsandproducersliveandworkinthegeographicalandintellectualconfinesofWashington,D。

  Bothcommunitiesbaskintheirownprovincialism,theirownparochialism。

Worse,theytalkconstantlytooneanother,therebyprovidingartificialreinforcementtotheirsharedviewpoints。
