NelsonMandelawasafigureofinternationalfame,andmanydetailsofhislifeandcareerwerepublicknowledge.ButhereareafewthingsyoumaynothaveknownaboutthelateSouthAfricanleader.

Hewasaboxingfan.Inhisyouth,NelsonMandelaenjoyedboxing.Evenduringthe27yearshespentinprison,hewouldexerciseeverymorning."Ididnotenjoytheviolenceofboxingsomuchasthescienceofit.Iwasinterestedinhowonemovedone'sbodytoprotectoneself,howoneusedastrategybothtoattackandretreat,howonepacedoneselfoveramatch,"hewroteinhisautobiographyLongWalktoFreedom.

HisoriginalnamewasnotNelson.RolihlahlaMandelawasnineyearsoldwhenateacherattheprimaryschoolwherehewasstudyinginQunu,SouthAfrica,gavehimanEnglishname—Nelson—inaccordancewiththecustomtogiveallschoolchildrenChristiannames.

ThiswascommonpracticeinSouthAfricaandinotherpartsofthecontinent,whereapersoncouldoftenbegivenanEnglishnamethatforeignerswouldfinditeasiertopronounce.

Hehadhisownlawfirm,butittookhimyearstogetalawdegree.Mr.Mandelastudiedlawonandofffrom1939,failingabouthalfthecourseshetook,andinAugust1952,heandOliverTamboestablishedSouthAfrica'sfirstblacklawfirminJohannesburg.Heperseveredtofinallysecurealawdegreewhileinprisonin1989.

HewasonaUSterrorwatchlistuntil2008.Beforethis,alongwithotherformerANCleaders,Mr.MandelawasonlyabletovisittheUSwithspecialpermissionfromthesecretaryofstate,becausetheANChadbeendesignated(指定)aterroristorganizationinthe1980sbySouthAfrica'sformergovernment.

"ItisfranklyaratherembarrassingmatterthatIstillhavetogiveupmyowncounterparts—theforeignministerofSouthAfrica,nottomentionthegreatleader,NelsonMandela,"thenSecretaryofStateCondoleezzaRicesaidin2008.

Heforgothisglassestherewhenhewasreleasedfromprison.Mr.Mandela'sreleaseonFebruary11,1990followedyearsofpoliticalpressure.Onthatday,hewas"astonishedandalittlealarmed",herecalledlater.Mr.Mandelaandhisthen-wifeWinnieweretakentothecenterofCapeTowntoaddressahugecrowd.Butwhenhepulledoutthetextofhisspeech,herealizedhehadforgottenhisglassesthereandhadtoborrowWinnie's.

Womenwithchildrenweremorelikelytobe"veryhappy"withtheirlivesiftheymadeafamily-relatedworksacrifice.Bycontrast,thehappinessofmarriedmenwasnotsignificantlyrelatedtomakingworksacrificesfortheirfamilies.

Theseresultsdonotprovethatspendinglesstimeonworkmakeswomenhappier.Itcouldbe,forinstance,thathappierwomenaremorelikelytomakeworksacrifices.Oritcouldbethatmoreabundantmothers,whoaremorelikelytobehappyaboveacertainlevelofincome,canspendmoretimewiththeirfamiliesthanpoorermothers.

Mostmotherswouldprefernottoworkfull-time,andthemostpopularoptionforwomen,whenitcomestobalancingworkandfamily,ispart-timework.ANewYorkTimessurveythisyearfoundthat49percentofmotherswishedtoworkpart-time,comparedto27percentwhowishedtoworkfull-time.
