“ForgenerationstheyhavebeenafeatureofIndianlifebutnowtheycan'tearnalivingforfearofarrest,”saidBeharDutt,aconservationistbehindtheplans,“ifapolicemandoesn’tcatchthem,animalrightsactivistsreportthem.”

Manysnakecharmershavecontinuedtoworkclandestinelysincetheban,despitethethreatofuptothreeyearsinjail.Buttheirtrademarkcloth-coveredbaskets,hungfromabamboopolecarriedacrosstheirshoulders,makethemaneasytargetforpolice.

InMay2002,Katiesetupthe“FindMattCampaign”,withthegoalsofraisingpublicawareness(意识)aboutanimalcrueltyandhavingasmanyeyesaspossiblelookforMatt.
