whenIarrivedinBuenosAiresinthebeginningof2010,Icouldbarelyorderfoodinalocalrestaurant.Twoyearslater,IcalmlyexplainedthemechanicsofRussiangrammartoaGuatemalanfriend…inhernativeSpanish.

Today,I’mconversationallyfluentinbothSpanishandBrazilianPortuguese,andlowconversationalinRussian.I’mnotgoingtoblowsmokeupyourassandtellyouitwaseasyorthatthere’ssomeshortcutorhack.Ipracticedmyassoff.Honestly,I’veseenthesupposed“hacks”forlanguage-learning,andnoneofthemworkedforme.Ittookhoursofstudycombinedwithstumblingthroughmany,manyconversations.

Herearesomelanguage-learningtipsI’vegatheredoverthepastfewyears:

1.Conversation,Conversation,Conversation. Ifthere’sa“secret”or“hack”tolearninganewlanguage,it’sthis:

hoursandhoursofawkwardandstrenuousconversationwithpeoplebetterthanyouinthatlanguage.Anhourofconversation(withcorrectionsandadictionaryforreference)isasgoodasfivehoursinaclassroomand10hourswithalanguagecoursebyyourself.

Thereareafewreasonsforthis.Thefirstismotivation.Idon’tcarehowcoolyourstudyguideis,you’regoingtobefarmoreinvestedandmotivatedtocommunicatewithalivepersoninfrontofyouthanabookoraudioprogramonyourcomputer.

Thesecondreasonisthatlanguageissomethingthatneedstobeprocessed,notmemorized.I’mnoexpertonlanguagelearning,butinmyexperiencestaringandmemorizingawordinabookorwithflashcards100timesdoesnotstickthesamewaythatbeingforcedtouseawordinconversationameretwoorthreetimesdoes.

Ibelievethereasonisthatourmindsplacemorepriorityonmemorieswhichinvolveactualhumanandsocialexperiences,memorieswhichhaveemotionstiedtothem.So,forinstance,ifIlookuptheverbfor“tocomplain”anduseitinasentencewithanewfriend,chancesareI’malwaysgoingtoassociatethatwordwiththatspecificinteractionandconversationIwashavingwithher.WhereasIcanblowbythatsameword20timeswithflashcards,andeventhoughImaygetitright,Ihaven’tactuallypracticedimplementingit.Itmeansnothingtome,soitislesslikelytostickwithme.

2.Intensityofstudytrumpslengthofstudy. WhatImeanbythisisthatstudyingalanguagefourhoursadayfortwoweekswillbemorebeneficialforyouthanstudyingonehouradayfortwomonths.Thisisonereasonwhysomanypeopletakelanguageclassesinschoolandneverrememberanything.It’sbecausetheyonlystudy3-4hoursperweekandoftentheclassesareseparatedbymultipledays.

Languagerequiresalotofrepetition,alotofreferenceexperiences,andaconsistentcommitmentandinvestment.It’sbettertoallotaparticularperiodofyourlife,evenifit’sonly1-2weeks,andreallygoatit100%,thantohalfassitoverthecourseofmonthsorevenyears.

3.Classessuckandareaninefficientuseoftimeandmoney. Allthingsconsidered,yougetareallypoorreturnforyourtimeandeffortingroupclasses.Therearetwoproblems.Thefirstisthattheclassmovesatthepaceofitssloweststudent.Thesecondisthatlanguagelearningisafairlypersonalprocess—everyonenaturallylearnssomewordsortopicseasierthanothers,thereforeaclassisnotgoingtobeabletoaddresseachstudent’spersonalneedsaswellorinatimelyfashion.

Forinstance,whenItookRussianclassesIfoundverbconjugationstobesimplebecauseIhadalreadylearnedSpanish.ButanEnglishclassmatestruggledquiteabitwiththem.Asaresult,Ispentalotofmyclasstimewaitingaroundforhimtocatchup.IalsohadaGermanclassmatewhohadalreadybeenexposedtocases,whereasIhadnocluewhattheywere.I’msureheendedupwaitingaroundformetofigureitoutaswell.Thelargertheclassroom,thelessefficientit’sgoingtobe.Anyonewhohadtotakeaforeignlanguageinschoolandretainedabsolutelynoneofitcantellyouthis.

4.Startwiththe100mostcommonwords. Notallvocabularyismadethesame.Somegivesyouabetterreturnoninvestmentthanothers.Forinstance,whenIlivedinBuenosAires,ImetaguywhohadbeenstudyingwithRosettaStoneformonths(notrecommended).Ihadbeenworkingonandoffwithatutorforafewweeks,butIwassurprisedbyhowhecouldnotfolloweventhemostbasicofconversationsdespitemonthsofstudyandlivingthere.

Itturnsout,muchofthevocabularyhehadbeenstudyingwasforkitchenutensils,familymembers,clothingandroomsinahouse.Butifhewantedtoasksomeonewhichpartoftowntheylivedin,hehadnoideawhattosay.

Startwiththe100mostcommonwordsandthenmakesentenceswiththemoverandoveragain.Learnjustenoughgrammartobeabletodothisanddoituntilyoufeelprettycomfortablewithallofthem.

5.Carryapocketdictionary. ThismadeamuchbiggerdifferencethanIexpected.IcarryanEnglish-SpanishdictionaryapponmyphoneandIuseditallthetimewhenIliveinSpanish-speakingcountries.MyfirsttwoweeksinBrazil,IwaslazyandkeptforgettingtodownloadanEnglish-Portugueseapplication.IstruggledinmyconversationsALOTduringthosetwoweeks,despiteknowingbasicPortuguese.

OnceIdownloadedthedictionary,therewasanimmediatedifference.Havingitonyourphoneisgreat,becauseittakestwosecondstolooksomethingupinthemiddleofconversation.Andbecauseyou’reusingitinconversation,you’rethatmuchmorelikelytorecallitlater.Evensomethingthatsimpleaffectedmyconversationsandabilitytointeractwithlocalsagreatdeal.

6.Keeppracticinginyourhead. Theotheruseforyourdictionaryisthatyoucanpracticewhilegoingaboutyourdayandnottalkingtoanyone.Challengeyourselftothinkinthenewlanguage.Weallhavemonologuesrunninginourhead,andtypicallytheyruninournativetongue.Youcancontinuetopracticeandconstructsentencesandfakeconversationsinyourheadinanewlanguage.Infact,thissortofvisualizationleadstomucheasierconversationswhenyouactuallyhavethem.Forinstance,youcanenvisionandpracticeaconversationaboutatopicyou’relikelytohavebeforeyouactuallyhaveit.Youcanbegintothinkabouthowyouwoulddescribeyourjobandexplainwhyyou’reintheforeigncountryinthenewlanguage.Inevitably,thosequestionswillcomeupandyou’llbereadytoanswerthem.

7.You’regoingtosayalotofstupidthings.Acceptit. WhenIwasfirstlearningSpanish,IoncetoldagroupofpeoplethatAmericansputalotofcondomsintheirfood.Later,Itoldagirlthatbasketballmakesmehorny.Um,yeah…It’sgoingtohappen.Trustme.

8.Figureoutpronunciationpatterns. AllLatin-basedlanguageswillhavesimilarpronunciationpatternsbasedonLatinwords.Forinstance,anywordthatendsin“-tion”inEnglishwillalmostalwaysendin“-ción”inSpanishand“-ção”inPortuguese.English-speakersarenotoriousforsimplyadding“-o”“-e”or“-a”totheendofEnglishwordstosaySpanishwordstheydon’tknow.Butstereotypesaside,it’ssurprisinghowoftenit’scorrect.“Destiny”is“destino,”“motive”is“motivo,”“part”is“parte”andsoon.InRussian,caseendingsalwaysrhymewithoneanother,soifyouaretalkingaboutafemininenoun(suchas“Zhen-shee-na”),thenyouknowthattheadjectivesandadverbswillusuallyrhymewithitsending(“krasee-vaya”asopposedto“krasee-vee”).

9.Useaudioandonlinecoursesforthefirst100wordsandbasicgrammar. Afterthattheyshouldonlybeusedforreferenceandnothingmore.Therearealotofstudymaterials:

Pimsleur,RosettaStone,Berlitz,DuoLingo,etc.Thesecoursesaregreatforgettingyoufromabsolutelynoabilityinalanguagetobeingabletospeakbasicsentencesandphraseswithinafewdaystime.They’realsogoodforteachingthemostfundamentalvocabulary(wordssuchas:

the,I,you,eat,want,thanks,etc.).
