“Itworriespeopletothinkthatone’spersonalphotos,addressbook,andwhoknowswhatelsecanbeobtainedandevenpostedonlinewithoutpermission,”Mr.SchumerwroteinhislettertotheF.T.C.“Ifthetechnologyexiststoopenthedoortothiskindofprivacyinvasion,thensurelytechnologyexiststocloseit,andthat’sexactlywhatmusthappen.”

Mr.SchumersaidifAppleandGooglecouldnotcometoanagreementtofixtheproblem,thenhewouldbeforcedtotaketheissuefurther.

Hesaidothercompanieshadbeenwillingtoworkwithhisofficetofixissues.“I’moptimisticthatwecangetthischangedwithoutanyregulation,”hesaid.“Ifit’snotchanged,thenwe’llturntotheF.T.C.,andifthatdoesn’tworkthenwe’llconsiderlegislativeapproach.”
