Abstract
Sincetheinventionofthefirstcomputerintheworldin1946,computertechnologyhasprogressedatanunprecedentedspeed.Nooneinthe1940scouldimaginethatcomputertechnologywilldevelopsofast,norcananyonepredictthatcomputerscanplaysoimportantaroleinoureverydaylifelikethepresent.Withcomputersbeingsowidelymadeuseof,languagesassociatedwithcomputersarespreadingamongpeoplelikecrazy.However,indescribingactivitiesandobjectsaboutthisnewrealm,peoplearemetwithdifficulties,fortherearenowordsorlanguagestheretodescribethembasedonpeople’spreviousexperience.Thus,metaphorsarenaturallyappliedinthisspecificfield.
AsthefirstcomputersareinventedbyAmericansandthelanguagesusedisEnglish.Nowadays,technologyandculturecommunicationbetweencountrieshavebecomemoreandmoreeasyandChinahavetoexplorewhattheoutsideworldcanoffer.SoChinahastotranslatemostoftheEnglishforScienceandTechnology(EST)intoChinese.InthetranslatingofofEST,peoplemayencountermanymetaphors.Howtotranslatethesewordsandexpressionswilleventuallyaffecthowpeopleunderstandthescienceandtechnology.
Inthispaper,theauthortriesanalyzehowmetaphorscanbeusedincomputerEnglishandtriestofindabetterwaytotranslatethem.TheauthorfindsthatConceptualIntegrationTheory(CIT)proposedbyFauconnierin1985canbeappliedtoanalyzemetaphortranslation.TheConceptualIntegrationTheoryelaboratesfourbasicmentalspacesandhasbecomeamajorfocusforpeopletodocognitiveresearch.Basedonthetheoreticalframeworkproposedabove,theauthorcollectshisdatafromtextbooksanddictionariesforcomputerEnglishandthestudycommences.InanalyzingthethreemainsourcesofmetaphorsinEST,theauthorbringsforwardthreebasictranslationstrategies,namely“meaningtranslation”,“pronunciationtranslation”and“imagetranslation”.WhatshouldalsobementionedisthattheauthorhasalsopointedoutsomeotherfactorsthatmightaffectthemetaphortranslationofcomputerEnglish.
Inthisthesis,theauthortriestofigureouthisownwaysofmetaphortranslationbasedonthestudyofFauconnier’sConceptualIntegrationTheory.Hopefully,themethodproposedbytheauthorcanshedsomelightonmetaphortranslationforprofessionaltranslators,computerfansandITprofessionals.

摘要
自从1946年世界上第一台计算机诞生以来,计算机技术就以前所未有的速度发展。
1940年代,没有人可以想象得出如今电脑技术可以发展如此之快,也没有人可以预测到如今电脑在人们生活中所发挥得如此重要的作用。
由于计算机的普遍使用,与之有关的语言的传播也疯狂地进行。
但是,在描述这个领域的行为和事物时,人们经常会遇到困难,因为在人们的经验中没有这些单词和语言。
因此,隐喻就自然被应用到这个领域。
由于第一批计算机是美国发明的,所以与之相关的语言就是英语。
现在,各个国家之间技术和文化交流越来越频繁,中国也亟须从国外学习新技术。
所以,科技英语汉译在中国重要性还是很大的。
在翻译科技英语的时候,人们可能会遇到很多隐喻的问题。
怎样翻译这些词汇和表达最终将影响人们怎样理解科学和技术。
本论文中,笔者分析了计算机英语中的隐喻,并试图找到优化隐喻翻译的方法。
笔者发现,1985年福柯尼耶提出“概念整合”理论可以用来分析科技英语中的隐喻。
概念整合理论有四个基本的心理空间,而且业已变成人们进行认知研究的一个主要关注对象。
根据上文构建的理论框架,作者从计算机技术教科书和词典里面收集数据,本研究就展开了。
在分析科技英语隐喻的三个主要来源后,笔者提出了三种基本的翻译策略,即“按意翻译”、“按音翻译”、“按形翻译”。
值得一提的是,笔者也指出其他可能影响计算机英语隐喻翻译的因素。
依据福柯尼耶的概念整合理论,本文作者试图提出科技英语隐喻翻译的方法。
希望笔者提出的这些方法能够给专业翻译人员、电脑爱好者和信息技术专业人员的翻译工作提供一些帮助。

Introduction
ThegreatChinesephilosopherConfuciusoncesaid“Ifnamesbenotcorrect,languageisnotinaccordancewiththetruthofthings.Iflanguagebenotinaccordancewiththetruthofthings,affairscannotbecarriedontosuccess.”(JamesLegge:
2011)Thatistosaythatifthenamesofsomethingarenotcorrect,languagewillnotbeinaccordancewiththeactualsituationofthings.Asaresult,thedeviantoflanguagewillleadtothefailureofthings.Therefore,onecanseetheimportanceof“naming”.
Withthetechnologyandculturecommunicationintheworlddevelopingatanunprecedentedspeed,theneedtounderstandeachotherhasbecomeevermoreurgent.Currently,Chinahastolearnalotfromoccidentalcountriesintermsoftechnology.Astheworld’stechnologyisdevelopingsofastthatmoreandmorenewwordsandmetaphorshavetobeusedtodescribethenewrealmoftechnology.Howtotranslatethesemetaphorshasbecomeoneofthemostimportantproblemsthatneedtobedealtwith.
1.1Researchbackgroundandrationale
AsConfuciusoncesaid:
“Ifnamesbenotcorrect,languageisnotinaccordancewiththetruthofthings.Iflanguagebenotinaccordancewiththetruthofthings,affairscannotbecarriedontosuccess.”“Names”caninsomewaybedimmedaswhatthispaperwilldealwithandthescientificEnglishtranslationwillbediscussedinthispaperlater.
AsChina’seconomyisintegratingwiththeworldatanunprecedentedspeed,Englishassociatedwithbusiness,managementandandtechnologyiswidelyusedintheinternationalarena,thustheimportanceofcomputerEnglish.However,theauthorofthispaperfindsthatinthecomputerEnglish,someofthetranslationsofthemetaphorsandexpressionsaretotallyunrecognizableandunacceptableandtheyarealsodifficulttorenderintoChinese.WhenseeingthetranslatedversionsoftechnologyEnglish,onemightbeutterlylostastowhatthelanguagemeans.Thiskindofconditionwilldefinitelynotonlyinfluencetheunderstandingandcommunicationofpartiesinvolvedininternationalcommunicationandtechnologytransfer,butwillalsohaveabadeffectonthelearningofthespecifictechnologyEnglish,resultingindisturbedcommunication.Soitisnecessaryfortranslatorstolearnsometechniquesconcerningmetaphortranslation.
1.2Researchsignificance
Intheauthor’sworkasatranslator,hefindsitverydifficulttotranslatesomeofthemetaphorsincomputerEnglish.Sometimes,theauthorfindsthetranslationutterlyunrecognizablewhenreferringtothesourcelanguage.Hopefully,thisresearchonmetaphortranslationfromtheperspectiveofConceptualIntegrationTheorymightshedsomelightonthetranslationofmetaphortranslationofcomputerEnglishboththeoreticallyandpractically.
1.2.1Theoreticalsignificance
ThepresentstudytriestoanalyzethetranslationoftermsfromtheperspectiveofFauconnier’sConceptualIntegrationTheory,hopingtoshedsomelightonthetranslationofmetaphorsinEnglishforcomputers.InmakinguseofFauconnier’snetworkmodeloffourspaces,theauthorwillcontinuetoelaboratehowtherealizationofmetaphortranslationofEnglishforcomputerswithConceptualIntegrationTheorycanbepossible.Hopefully,thisnewperspectivecangiverisetomoretheoreticalstudyinthisrealm.
1.2.2Practicalsignificance
ThispapermayhelptobettertranslatemetaphorsinEnglishforcomputers.Basedonthetheoreticalstudyonmetaphortranslation,theauthormayfindsomebetterwaystodealwithmetaphortranslation.ThebettertranslationofEnglishmetaphorswillcontributetothebetterunderstandingofthespecifictechnology;inturn,theChinesetranslationwillfacilitatetheunderstandingofunderstandingofthescientifictexts,contributingtothecommunicationoftechnologies.Inasense,itwillhelpthebroadenthevocabulariesofthetargetlanguage.
1.3Researchobjectiveandresearchquestions
Inthispaper,theauthorwouldliketohaveatentativestudyofmetaphortranslationofEnglishforcomputersandfindourhowcanmetaphorsinscientificEnglishbebettercomprehendedandtranslatedintoChinese.Inordertomeettheseobjectives,theauthorwillfirstlyanalyzehowtheEnglishmetaphorsarepossibleinscientifictextsandalsothemappingprocessofobjectsfromthesourcedomaintothetargetdomain.Intheprocess,theauthorwillanalyzethefourbasicmentalspaces—“inputspace1”,“genericspace”,“blendedspace”and“inputspace2”.Bymakinguseoftheconceptualintegrationnetworks,theauthorcarriesouttentativeproposalsformetaphortranslation.
IntranslatingEnglishforcomputers,theauthorfindsmanymetaphorsandsomeofthemcannotbeunderstoodinnormalsense.Questionswhichtheauthorcomesacrossinthisthesisandareneededtobeansweredareasfollows:

1.4Methodologyanddatacollection
TheresearchwillmainlybeaqualitativestudyofthetranslationofmetaphorsinEnglishforScienceandTechnology,especiallyEnglishforcomputers.
Firstly,theauthorwilltrytofigureoutthetherelationshipbetweenmetaphorsandpeople’sthinking,withthefacilitationofLakoffandJohnson’sunderstandingofmetaphors.Lakoffexplainshowmetaphorspossibleindescribingsomethingthatpeoplecannotnormallyencounterintheirdailylifeandhealsopointsoutthatmetaphorsarenotwhatpeopleconventionallythoughtasarhetoricalmethod,butthethinkingofpeople.AsthefamousDanishphysicistNielsHenrikDavidBohroncepointedoutthatindescribingthemostadvancedsciencewhichcontainsnumerousnovelties,itisbetterforpeopletoresorttometaphors.Thus,therelationshipbetweenmetaphorsandpeople’sthinkingisrevealed.
Secondly,theauthorwillanalyzeindetailtheConceptualIntegrationTheoryandtherealizationofmetaphortranslationwiththehelpofthistheory.Fauconnierbringsforwardtheabovementionedtheoryin1985andmakingconceptualintegrationtheorythefocusforpeopletodocognitivestudies.In
