Shortlyafterhisdeath,peopleinCamarena’stownbeganwearingredribbonsinhishonor.ThenCamarena’shighschoolfriend,HenryLozano,startedCamarenaClub.Hundredsofpeoplejoinedtheclubandpromisedtobedrug-freeinordertohonorthedeathofCamarena.Andthenschoolsinseveralstatesbegantojoinin.Now,attheendofeveryOctober,millionsofAmericanswearredribbonsinmemoryof“Kiki”Camarena.So,in1988,thefirstnationalRedRibbonWeekwasfoundedinAmerica.
