ThelifeandworkofMarieCurie

MarieCurieisprobablythemostfamouswomanscientistwhohaseverlived.BornMariaSklodowskainPolandin1867,sheisfamousforherworkonradioactivity,andwastwiceawinneroftheNobelPrize.Withherhusband,PierreCurie,andHenriBecquerel,shewasawardedthe1903NobelPrizeforPhysics,andwasthensolewinnerofthe1911NobelPrizeforChemistry.ShewasthefirstwomantowinaNobelPrize.

Fromchildhood,Mariewasremarkableforherprodigiousmemory,andattheageof16wonagoldmedaloncompletionofhersecondaryeducation.Becauseherfatherlosthissavingsthroughbadinvestment,shethenhadtotakeworkasateacher.FormherearningsshewasabletofinancehersisterBronia’smedicalstudiesinParis,ontheunderstandingthatBroniawould,inturn,laterhelphertogetaneducation.

In1891thispromisewasfulfilledandMariewenttoParisandbegantostudyattheSorbonne(theUniversityofParis).Sheoftenworkedfarintothenightandlivedonlittlemorethanbreadandbutterandtea.Shecamefirstintheexaminationinthephysicalsciencesin1893,andin1894wasplacedsecondintheexaminationinmathematicalsciences.ItwasnotuntilthespringofthatyearthatshewasintroducedtoPierreCurie.

Their,marriagein1895markedthestartofapartnershipthatwassoontoachieveresultsofworldsignificance.FollowingHenriBecquerel’sdiscoveryin1896ofanewphenomenon,whichMarielatercalled‘radioactivity’,MarieCuriedecidedtofindoutiftheradioactivitydiscoveredinuraniumwastobefoundinotherelements.Shediscoveredthatthiswastrueforthorium.

Turingherattentiontominerals,shefoundherinterestdrawntopitchblende,amineralwhoseradioactivity,superiortothatofpureuranium,couldbeexplainedonlybythepresenceintheoreofsmallquantitiesofanunknownsubstanceofveryhighactivity.PierreCuriejoinedherintheworkthatshehadundertakentoresolvethisproblem,andthatledtothediscoveryofthenewelements,poloniumandradium.WhilePierreCuriedevotedhimselfchieflytothephysicalstudyofthenewradiations,MarieCuriestruggledtoobtainpureradiuminthemetallicstate.ThiswasachievedwiththehelpofthechemistAndre-LouisDebierne,oneofPierreCurie’spupils.Basedontheresultsofthisresearch,MarieCuriereceivedherDoctorateofScience,andin1903MarieandPierresharedwithBecquereltheNobelPrizeforPhysicsforthediscoveryofradioactivity.

neandEve,in1897and1904failedtointerruptherscientificwork.ShewasappointedlecturerinphysicsattheEcoleNormaleSupé

rieureforgirlsinSè

vres,France(1900),andintroducedamethodofteachingbasedonexperimentaldemonstrations.InDecember1904shewasappointedchiefassistantinthelaboratorydirectedbyPierreCurie.

Thesuddendeathofherhusbandin1906wasabitterblowtoMarieCurie,butwasalsoaturningpointinhercareer:

henceforthshewastodevoteallherenergytocompletingalonethescientificworkthattheyhadundertaken.OnMay13,1906,shewasappointedtotheprofessorshipthathadbeenleftvacantonherhusband’sdeath,becomingthefirstwomantoteachattheSorbonne.In1911shewasawardedtheNoblePrizeforChemistryfortheisolationofapureformofradium.

DuringWorldWarI,MarieCurie,withthehelpofherdaughterIrè

ne,devotedherselftothedevelopmentoftheuseofX-radiography,includingthemobileunitswhichcametobeknownas‘LittleCuries’,usedforthetreatmentofwoundedsoldiers.In1918theRadiumInstitute,whosestaffIrè

nehadjoined,begantooperateinearnest,andbecameacentrefornuclearphysicsandchemistry.MarieCurie,nowatthehighestpointofherfameand,from1922,amemberoftheAcademyofMedicine,researchedthechemistryofradioactivesubstancesandtheirmedicalapplications.

In1921,accompaniedbyhertwodaughters,MarieCuriemadeatriumphantjourneytotheUnitedStatestoraisefundsforresearchonradium.Womentherepresentedherwithagramofradiumforhercampaign.MariealsogavelecturesinBelgium,Brazil,SpainandCzechoslovakiaand,inaddition,hadthesatisfactionofseeingthedevelopmentoftheCurieFoundationinParis,andtheinaugurationin1932inWarsawoftheRadiumInstitute,wherehersisterBroniabecamedirector.

OneofMarieCure’soutstandingachievementswastohaveunderstoodtheneedtoaccumulateintenseradioactivesources,notonlytotreatillnessbutalsotomaintainanabundantsupplyforresearch.TheexistenceinParisattheRadiumInstituteofastockof1.5gramsofradiummadeadecisivecontributiontothesuccessoftheexperimentsundertaken
