In1951,thethendirectoroftheGuinnessBrewery,SirHughBeaver,wantedtosettleanargumentaboutthefastestbirdinEurope.Aftertalkingtohisfriends,heconcludedthatabookwhichansweredsuchquestionsmightpopular.TheGuinnesscompanyhiredacompanytowritewhatlaterbecameGuinnessBookofWorldRecords.Thefirsteditionwaspublishedin1955andhasbeenabest—sellereversince.

Morethan60,000newrecordsaresentintothebookeachyear,buttheycannotallbeprinted.Instead,theeditorsofthebooksetdowntherecordsandkeeptrackoftheminotherways.Therecordsareputintodifferentcategories.GuinnessBookofWorldRecordshaschaptersonthehumanbody,amazingfeats,thenaturalworld,scienceandtechnology,artsandthemedia,modelsociety,travelandtransport,andsportsandgames.Youcanlearnthattheoldestpersonisawomanwholivedtobe122yearsand164days,thatthelongestmoustachereachedalengthof1.6metresandthatthelongestpoisonoussnakeis5.71metreslong.Therearealsostrangerecords,liketheEnglishmanwhobalancedasmallcarweighing159.6kilogram’sonhisheadforthirty-threeseconds!
