“Itperfectlyconfirmsourownresults,”saysWilliamTecumsehFitch,abiologistattheUniversityofViennaandtheleadauthorofthemacaquestudy.Thediscovery“providesmoreevidencethatscientistshavemisunderstoodmonkeys’vocaltract(声道).”

Thatmistakecomesfromamisunderstandingofthemonkeylarynx(喉部)—thepartinthethroatwherevoiceisproduced.“Itwasthoughtinordertomakevowels,youhadtohavealowlarynx(voicebox),ashumansdo,”saysJoelFagot,ascientistatAix-MarseilleUniversityinFranceandanauthorofthenewstudy.Becausemonkeylarynxesaresetmuchhigherthanourown,scientiststhoughtthisdifferenceexplainedwhymonkeyscouldnotproducevowels.Yethumanbabieswithhighlarynxescanalsopronouncevowels,afactthatperplexedFagotandhiscolleagues.

Tofindout,Fagot,hiscolleaguesandthestudy’sfirstauthor,Louis-JeanBoefromGrenobleAlpesUniversityinFrance,recorded1,404callsof15Guineababoons.TheiranalysisoftheircallsshowsthatthebaboonsproducedatleastfivedifferentsoundsthatmatchvowelsintheInternationalPhoneticAlphabet(国际音标).That’squitecomparablewithmanyhumanlanguages,mostofwhichhavethreetofivevowels.

Thescientistsalsocheckedthevocaltractsoftwobaboonsthatdiedofnaturalcauses.Theyfoundthemonkeys’tongueshavethesamemusclesashumantongues.Thisshowstheycanmakeexactmovementstoformeachvowellikesound.Itisthisabilitytocontrolthetongue,ratherthanthepositionofthelarynx,thatiskeytoproducingvowellikesounds.
