Government’sfailuretoperformthisroleintheearly1930stransformedrecessionintodepression.Scholarswilldebatewhichinterventionsthistime--theFederalReserve’ssupportofafailingcreditsystem,guaranteesofbankdebt,Obama’s“stimulus”planandbank"stresstest"--countedmostinpreventingarecurrence.Regardless,allthesecomplexmeasureshadthesamepsychologicalpurpose:

toreassurepeoplethatthefreefallwouldstopand,thereby,curbthefearthatwouldperpetuate(使持久)afreefall.
